What are you going to use the car for? I would have thought that a GT42 is going to have monumental lag for a road car meaning that, especially on UK roads, you'll hardly ever get the chance to open it up.

I would echo what has already been said about that turbo being drag racing only. You are not going to get it going on the road even with a 2.5. As for what you would need to extract everything from the turbo you will need to put over 10k into the engine easy.Comment

I agree, even if you can get the GT42 for free it would cost you a lot less to buy a
GTX 3076, which will make 600+ hp and the supporting mods will be half the cost of the 42, you will also have much less lag and no need for over 7.5k rpm, this
alone will save you a fortune.Comment

I'm sure will20v is using a gt42 with a 2.2 but don't no about head work besides twin 7a custom cams engine stock pistons and uprated rods I've been told
will be fine and he had his standard maf on cold pressure side mapped by mrc best of asking him he made 600+ and maxed out his injectors 750cc so I would go 1000cc to be safe and fuel pumps I would def run two one in tank and one inline as I'm doing so on my small gt35 but built to take that and more

With a GT42 you'll be slower than most budget tuned hot hatches on regular road. You probabil will have a 1500rpm - powerband or lower with stock revlimit. AFAIK there was a sugestion on forum - buy the smallest turbo that can give you the power you want - at least for street use :-).Comment

If your making anything less than 800hp with a GT42 youI'm sure will20v is using a gt42 with a 2.2 but don't no about head work besides twin 7a custom cams engine stock pistons and uprated rods I've been told

are using the wrong turbo, you've just got loads of lag for no reason.Comment

you may make hybrid... use the gt40 bearing and hotside (0,94) and gt 42 or 45 cold side, and 3,5" downpipin and exaust...Comment

Yes if it was not mapped fully for a reason...every one has got different opinions but lag is not on people minds when you go gt42 it's what power it can achieve and a big smile on your face when boost comes in

This pretty much right, I have no interest in racing people on the road and don't have the funds to support racing it competitively. I simply have always been fascinated by big turbo's and would love to have a car with a big turboComment

You missing the point, to build an engine around a GT42 to it's full potential (850-1000hp) is going to cost a least twice as much as building an engine to make 600hp. Not only that but the 600hp motor will be quite reliable were as the 1000 hp motor will need rebuilding ever 5 mins.
The other thing is also that the drive train will not take 1000hp in stock form either so more mega bucks on that also.
Shooting for ~600 hp you can keep stock pistons, just do the rods, keep revs down so you don't need new bearings every weekend and don't need a dry sump system (saves a fortune).
To give you an idea a ~600hp car you can drive can be done for 5-7k and a 1000hp car will cost you 25-30k, if you don't belive me speak to people with that power level.Comment

Having driven a Skyline with a 42 on the road I would certainly avoid using it unless its a dedicated drag car. I don't think we had even seen .2bar by 4000rpm, was moving by 5000rpm though but due to a 8k rev limit the power band was narrow. As a comparison we did a 2.5l Skyline ( above was a 2wd gtr motor ) with a built engine, Cosworth ported head, cams and a billet 3076, it made 570 on the dyno and would destroy the Skyline running the 42 as it was so responsive and still making plenty of power above 7500rpm making it a VERY fast road car, come to think about it the car was also full road trim R33 where as the other was fully stripped R32 which are much lighter.
GT42 will look good on a spec sheet, unfortunately the reality is that they offer poor performance on a street car and due to the massive power they can achieve they need a well specced engine and a well sorted transmission setup if you dont want to spend more time off the road then on it.Comment

I think a well set up engine with about 500-550 will make you poo your pants .
Allso is the car set up for more power ie brakes suspension ect ect .
I my self know how you feel thinking more is best I'm going for around 600 but went out in a car running 450ish and it was a monster round town .Comment
