10w50 for a road car. 5w30 is totally wrong, 10w40 is OE spec bit may be a bit thin for a 100k+ engine & turbo.

Must be fully synthetic, many use Fuchs and Silkolene I think.

Where on earth did I get 5-30 from then, sure it was something to do with cold weather needing thinner oil and older engines needing this too. Hope I haven't caused any problems cause that's what's been in mine for the last 6 months only done a few thouusand miles but thought I'd change just because of the time it's been in there

I had gone with 10w40 last time as per OE recommendations but it uses a little more oil and the turbo seems to have gone kaput, so I am changing to 10w50 and this thread just reminded me to go search out some good fully synth oil.

                        10W60 is track day grade

5w30 is used in modern engines but these are... more modern, so tolerances, materials and design are that bit further on.

I've gone with 5-40 Castrol edge, I don't thrash the car about like a loon, 80% of the time I drive nice n easy so don't think 10-50 would even get to the right temp

5w30 on my 3b.Not burning,no lifter noise,2.5 bar idle oil pressure with oil hot.
                              10000km without adding oil,now 5k again,and still clear.At 6-7k starts to get brown.
Bmw one.I think for std oil temp is ok in winter.
10w40 most of them are not synthetic.Mobil 10w40 when hot gets lifters out of the engine.
Castol edge 5w40 could be ok in all seasons and for power cars 10w60 in summer.
