lol i did wonder how the rocker gasket was going to let oil into the cylinders! good to know stem seals can be done in situ! i can do the rocker gasket at the same time !!

i own and run a motorsport prep company so will be carrying out all work myself, just doing as much research as possible into the workings of the rs2 to get a heads up on usual issues and experiences from owners before getting stuck in. spend my time doing as much diagnostics beforehand in the eves as possible so i can just get stuck into doing repairs/maintenance in the workshop. downside is that im currently booked solid until june!! so im not going to have a chance to get the car in the workshop for a while lol. hence spending time on here asking questions rather than just carrying out my own diagnostics on the car!

if it comes to it, i may just give it to a mate on site whos a good mechanic and just say change this, this and this, as my time is very limited atm!

is it worthwhile just replacing a lot of the breather setup rather than cleaning it all out? or is it mega bucks?? all still available?

am i best going direct to audi for most parts? or will ecp do bits for these still?

as mentioned, the first port of call is a good service/oil change etc as this may cure it straight away!

at the same time i dont mind changing parts that these sometimes suffer with, to have piece of mind the car is tip top. i save thousands on labor so dont mind spending on parts!

    cheers
    nick

When I first bought my car I had exactly the same problem. I know that my car was stored three years in the garage. I changed oil and after about one week of normal use its all gone.no smoke at all and its ok till nowbefore you will start replace any parts i would treat the beast with very good quality oil and i would just drive it for few days.

Would be a result! Would like to enjoy the car rather than start taking it apart lol!

The other thing to do is pull all the PCV system crap off and wash the crud out of it, it will almost certainly be choked with gunk.

The gasket that fits underneath the coilpack cover and on top of the 5 chambers was replaced due to the rubber degrading. When the spark plugs were removed prior to the gasket change they were coated in oil.

Maybe I'm not making sense but all I know is that the smoking on start up problem I had before seems to have gone, even when I haven't driven it for a couple of weeks.

I'll keep quiet from now on and leave it to the experts then

spoke to the previous owner, and it had 5/30 oil put in it last service so hopefully an oil change to some 10/50 fuchs will do it some good!

mot runs out 14th of april so will chuck it in for an mot next week probably

What was the result of the oil change? Sorry to revive an old thread. I'm suffering smoking too, had the head off last year replacing valve stem oil seals so they should be ok. I'm using 5W 30 too, current mileage 146K.

He he, it seems so. This smoking has started since doing the RS2 conversion, it was fine on the standard turbo. I changed the oil before i carried out the conversion and can't rem what oil i put in it, i've certainly topped it up from the min mark on the dipstick a couple of times with Castrol Edge 5W 30. Im pretty sure thats what i put in it last oil change

Basically i've only put around 14k miles on the S2 since i bought it 8 years ago so not done many oil changes, spent most the time in the garage. I'm intrigued to see what thicker oil will do for the smoking during warm up from a cold start. Not the initial start up as that is fine, the smoking starts a few mins later if left idiling, but then clears when the car starts warming though to normal operating temps. Subsequent hot starts smoke a wee bit but then clear.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't this bad a couple of thousand miles ago.

Whats oil should i be using do you reckon?

I use Fuchs titan race 10-50

RS2 turbos are famous for smoking, especially with a 3" exhaust

I run Fuchs Titan 10/50 and have no smoking. Tried a similar Millers synthetic a few oil changes ago and got smoking on idle. Changed back to the Titan and no smoking. It does appear that the type and viscosity of your oil can cause these issues. 5/30 is way below the manufacturer's spec for these motors. I'd go with a 10/40 or 10/50.

I had the same issue with my S4 (280k on the clock) for the last few years I only drove it short distances and after storing it for 3 months I failed my WOF due to exhaust smoke (we don't have emissions testing here). I took it for a burn down the motorway for 30 minutes and took it back and they passed it..

Now days I am driving 50-60 km a day with more than half of that motorway driving and miraculously the engine has stopped smoking and it is also burning much less oil than it used to per km of driving.

So in short the answer is may be as simple as use the vehicle..

Cheers for the responses guys, since i topped it yesterday to the full mark on dipstick, i'll now monitor exactly how many miles it will do before needing topped again. When it reaches the min mark i'll do another oil change to 10/50 to see if that cures it, hopefully it will.

What is the manual recommended grade of oil for these engines? Eurocarparts don't list oil that thick when you type the reg number in? The car is only used as toy so mileage is just creeping up, however now that it's undergone the RS2 transformation i'm using it a lot more!!

I would guess the manual says 10/40 based on the age of the S2 and what was on the shelf back then. Would be interesting to know.
