I've used castrol Edge 10/40 for years with no smoking (well the odd cloud when not used for a while and booting it too early) reckon I'm getting close to 200,000 miles too
audi rs2 smoking on idle

Looks like i've been using too thin an oil then, i'm intrigued to see what difference the thicker oil makes. Before i bought the standard RS2 turbo i had purchased a Hoffer RS2 hybrid which did the same thing with smoking at idle but this was tried with the same type of engine oil. Perhaps the thicker oil would have cured that turbo. Infact i don't think i'll be needing that turbo now as the TS chips i have are for a standard RS2 turbo, the fuelling would no doubt be out with the Hoffer special, i only ever had it running at idle before the car was fit for the road. Might stick this up for sale soon actually to see if theres any interest.
Time to research thicker oil to see where the cheapest place to buy is.
As always guys, thanks for the help.

I've rebuilt my ABY engine up to rs2 spec with new compressor turbine and shaft and balanced , also 360deg bearing in the stock Rs2 turbo, yet to fire the engine up but I've put new quantum 5/40 in it ? Think this is ok ? Or should I run it then change to a 10/40 ?I run Fuchs Titan 10/50 and have no smoking. Tried a similar Millers synthetic a few oil changes ago and got smoking on idle. Changed back to the Titan and no smoking. It does appear that the type and viscosity of your oil can cause these issues. 5/30 is way below the manufacturer's spec for these motors. I'd go with a 10/40 or 10/50.Comment

I recon you will be fine using that. I've been told it's best to stick with one oil type/brand if possible, as changes to the oil type can be detrimental to old seals. Not sure whether this is true, but it sounds plausible.91 Modded 3B

this is the stuff you want (probably won't find cheaper either!)

I use millers stuff in all my motors and swear by it. Oil consumption usually goes down over the first couple of months and the engines definitely sound quieter too. Good oil at reasonable price IMOComment

Yeh keep us updated on the results 👍..
Think this has been covered in detail times past with the oilman , but different spec cars , how they're driven and their use require diff oils I guess , but the quantum platinum is what Audi / VAG specced me 5/40 so won't know if it'll smoke until I run it as I've not had this turbo on it in the past so can't compare..Comment
