Std Oil Pump + High revs

    Hi again guys

This time it's a question about taking the factory oil pump up to 7800 rpm which is where my rev limit is set at.

At the start I ran the engine with a totally standard oil system and it was quite obvious that the oil control was somewhat lacking. If the oil level was at the top of the dipstick it would usually end up in the catch tank and when the oil was low the engine would rattle the hydraulic lifters after a long pull at high revs. To stop this oil control problem I fitted a baffled/gated sump which stopped the oil ejection issue and allows me to keep oil to the top and stay there.

The problem now is when I use full revs on a long pull, say 2nd to 6th, I still get a rattle from the hydraulic lifters. The oil is full so I can only assume the pump is emptying the sump faster than the oil drains back, add that to surge from the acceleration and I have a problem. The obvious thing for me to do is increase the capacity of the sump but I remember years ago reading a post about someone modifying an oil pump or some part of the oil system to decrease the flow from the pump or increase the draining to the sump but can't find anything when I search.

    Cheers Baz

I also had a problem with oilpressure, sie link

My final solution was increase the capacity of the sump
i lowerd the bottom(and suctiontube) and it gives the engine an extra 1.5l oil also with a extra baffleplate but i have no picture of it
    this was with rs2 setup
now i place a gt3076r so acceleration is faster and must wait and see wat the oilpressure does afterwards
i hope this help for you

Thanks for the reply Nick, it sounds like the same problem.

A thought just occurred to me, you made baffles the same as mine right? Well what happens to the oil that returns to the sump behind the back baffle, it can't get back to the pickup. The baffles do a good job at stopping the initial +1g of acceleration but any oil that returns to the sump at the back can't get forward while the car is still pulling small g's -.25 in 5th and 6th while the revs are still high.

IIRC Repo's trick was to put a restrictor in the oil gallery to the head, not sure of the exact details.

I still do not understand why I had an oil pressure problem by acceleration with 350hp while other forum members with 500 hp and standard sump without baffles have no problems

@ error404:i think a restrictor in the oil gallery to the head is needed when you rebuild your head to mechanical lifters for higher rpm's

That must have been the thread I was reading.

It would depend on what revs you use to get 500hp, if I keep revs to 6800 I don't get problems.

That's strange, I only get it when using high revs or if my oil is low.

I'm quite sure some pumps will flow better than others. My pump always has good pressure. Too much IMO, which is why a restrictor of some kind may well work.

If its an ABY or AAN pump you can remove the shim in the pressure relief valve and see if that helps?

if you DO have a minor leak betveen the picup and the block/ maybee cracked.. you will have some problem... i will go for a bigger/ wider picup pipin ( about 5-6mmor likely) to the block/ pump...
its for a reduse of the oilflowspeed in the small pipin from the bottom of the sump to the pump...

I'll have a look, its an ABY.

Hi cat, are you saying try a wider diameter oil pickup? Whats a piping?

Pretty sere my oil pickup/pump doesn't have cracks.

from the screen to the pump; you DO have a small pipetubin about 30cm long; it MAY be to snall diameter with HIGH revs, the oil does have may to high speed; the the oilpump have cavitation = no oil
so i would have a larger diameter pipin from the screen to the pump..../ block
