you need to physically check turn the car over and have some one look if the rotor is turning as once the TDC is recognised the ECU takes over at least that will eliminate that

Oh well, as the rotor is obviously firing the spark plugs in the right order, I know it turns.

Here's some more pictures of what I've been up to. I'm afraid some will say "I told you so" .

-Took the dizzy out to visually check it and measure resistance over the rotor.
      - Resistance - 1,1 K ohm. Rotor didn't look good. Small cracks in the black part.

-Took the timing belt of, rechecked the timing, marked up all the timing marks in black marker to make it easier to see.

      - Refitted the distributor on the marks.

      No start.
Twisted the distributor anti-clockwise about 3mm, fired right up.

I stopped and started it a few times, everything was allright.
I waited for the temp gauge to reach 90°C, then switched off.
After that, it wouldn't start again.

I'm thinking, either the front crank sprocket has come "loose", or the hall sensor is on it's way out. A friend is bringing a locking tool over next weekend, so will be able to check that. The search for a new distributor is on!

Edit: Pics tomm, f**ked it up.

I had a similar issue with my 3b, turned out I had lined the fly wheel on the mark. I had mine lined up with the line on the fly wheel and not the line with the zero. Gave myself a few doh 's for that one.

            1. Get an improved sprocket while you're at it from this forum, see for sale section.
            2. I believe you can replace the hall sensor, or was that only on ABY/AAN/ADU?

I can't see that line anymore. Using the line with the "0".

You can't rely on the lower front pulley marks, they can be way out. On the 3B you must use the zero mark in the bellhousing window and you must roll forward onto it to take up any backlash in the cam belt and dizzy drive.

Yes, thats what I've done this time around. Didn't take up the slack in the dizzy, but it did start.
I'm at a loss for why it wouldn't start again though.

It looks like you don't have the narrow 3B rotor too? Not that would prevent it from starting that is down to the timing marks, but it would be wise to get one or file the current one own to size.
It's probably worth noting that pics of the timing marks linked on the first page show the flywheel mark on 200 20v with the 016 transmission which lines up a little different in the window on the bellhousing than the 01A in the S2.

You could be right on the rotor, although i measured it to 11mm. Is the narrow one even narrower?

When mine was lined up, it was with the line aligned with the straight piece in the bellhousing, and I could see half the "0".

Should probably change the topic text, as the timing doesn't sem to be the culprit. It starts when cold, but not when warm.

Is the hall sensor clean? Does the dizzy have a metal gear?

Cleaned it with contacts cleaner when I had it out. The gear is plastic, but looks allright.

Couldn't tell from the pics on the rotor it may be correct. As far as the no hot start I would suspect that the hall sensor in the dizzy is starting to fail.
