    Boost issues

    Hi guys.

I've noticed a strange behaviour of boost in cold days, which I cannot find a reason for (which happened with my old engine as well):

when outside temperatures drop below some 5-6°C ECU actually lowers boost from 1.7bar to ~1.5, while it seems to me it also reduces the ignition advance a bit. Any ideas why?
Is the ECU able to monitorize outside temperature and change settings accordingly?

    Mihnea, where are you?

    an add on:

last week, for example, outside temperature was fluctuating right in the above mentioned area. While running the car in a place where temperature was around 5°C ( and the two or three blasts I gave all produced the lowered boost issue) I immediatly afterwards entered a more sunny and warm road where outside temp. (showed by onboard display) reached about 8°C.
You know what? 1.7 bar boost and the wildest grunt ever.

The stock ECU programming is weird in this way - it deliberately tries to deliver consistent performance by adjusting for air temperature... so that the car doesn't become so dangerous and undriveable with radically different performance on cold days ! It's kinda counter-intuitive, I know, but I remember seeing some weirdness in some of the temperature compensation maps a long time ago. You might just have been on the edges of one of those temp-comp maps - depending on how aggressive Mihnea programmed it behave in this regard. Maybe he left you with stock settings in this regard on your RS2 based maps.

        Aha!

So there is a compensation actuated by the ECU !
        Thanks for the info Paul.

So now: MIHNEA PLEASE !! I need to talk to you.

        Ciao

Marco - are you ever planning on bringing your car to the UK so we can all have a look?

I was going to ask the same question as I've noticed lower boost (up to 0.2 bar) on mine recently with the lower ambient temps.

Same here. I've been down about 3-4 psi on the boost gauge over the winter months. Especially at the temperatures Marco mentioned. On the few days I've driven it when it's warmer (and actually been daylight - I love my working hours) it's been back to normal.

I'd put it down to another leak but the car pulls as well as ever and has none of the signs of a leak.

Mihnea must have changed something on my car then, as on cold mornings my boost is better. The car goes like hell on a fresh damp morning. Only problem is, when its wet and damp i cant use the power!!

Well everyone mine seems to grunt away at low revs upto about 2500-3000 then seems to lose a lot of boost just noticed it tonight. Is that to do with temp? Its -1 where i am. Just wonderin cause im new to these cars with turbos. Do ya think it could be something else?
IF it aint broke DONT! fix it

Hi, i noticed too these days having 5-7 degrees cold that the car sucks (it pulls not so hard like in hotter days! )

According the previous owner the car has a chip! Can it be so bad so that i have ca. 350-360 HP on hot days and on cold i take the stock boost pressures with 315 HP ???

I dont have a boost guage yet!

Therein is the joy of what can be done with ECU programming. Mihnea can sort it either way by setting up the temperature compensation maps to personal taste if need be...
