turbochargers for 500hp

I appreciate the input on this, but like I said the results I experienced were from real life experience. I ran the GTX setup for a couple of months, and went through the whole mapping process (which included pressure testing the whole boost system to 2 bar - leak free). As I mentioned I'm sure the GTX cold side could have made great horsepower, but I didn't want a street car that I had to change down 2 gears to hit some boost.Did you actually have the 12 fin blade changed for a 7 pin? Are you sure you had a GTX and not just the GT3071?
If what you say is true then I'm sorry to say that you probably ruined a perfectly nice turbo and paid a whole bunch to downgrade it as well. All you needed was the 0.63ar rather than the 0.82 and you could have a much better response at the expense of a bit of a surge on higher gears when pulling hard from low revs.
To get a urge very well designed billet wheel of a GTX and fit a 7 blade billet which you can pick up from eBay is no improvement.
I hope you actually have the facts wrong on this one. Besides more than 4000 rpm lag on the 3071 is likely that other factors have played in as well.
That's why I decided to speak to a professional (albeit too late really). Craig at TDI explained to me exactly why I was experiencing the tremendous lag, and he was not surprised at all that I was experiencing this from a GTX. You're right in saying that a .63 turbine housing would have helped, and in future I may go down this road to further improve response. However, the difference now with 7 blade wheel and comp housing is night and day. Plus I always have the GTX wheel and comp housing here to sell/ use in future for whatever reason.
I'm not slating GTX turbos or any other Garrett variants. I just wanted to give a little input to the original poster on my experiences.
If I were to build it again I'd go with an MD357 from Turbo Dynamics

I run a gtx3076, makes 556hp 600nm on pump gas @1.9bar. So gtx 3076 will do the trick.Attached Files'95 RS2Comment

I have a lot of customers that use holset with good results and great reliability as they r designed for trucks that run at 3bar and do a million miles.
What sort of power/response would I get from hx35 with 12cm housing?
The hy35 I linked in earlier post has 10cm housing. And claims even on a 2 ltr 4 pot full boost by 3700rpm and holds to redline of 7500. That gives same 500bhp+ output but with near 1000rpm bigger powerband than gtx3076r with added bonus its 500 quid new and should be more reliable!
Starting to lean toward holsetComment

You can find a example from my earlier post. If I remember right it was a 35 "Super" with #8 housing and water/meth injection, porting and other goodies, but you get the idea what this turbo is capable of.I have a lot of customers that use holset with good results and great reliability as they r designed for trucks that run at 3bar and do a million miles.

Can be hard to beat with GT3076r..? My friend has a similar output on his S2 with pump gas and no water/meth inject.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is with the 0.82ar or higher. The gtx3076 would not be that late. Then again this is the torque people are looking at and if you see at 4000rpm this engine makes 225hp while on the previous holset graph at 4000rpm you only had 175 hp give or take. So the difference is actually big in the early revs.
This is why I would only try the combination of a gtx3576 on a 0.63ar for a comfortable above 500 hp car with hopefully not later than 4000rpm lag.

The holsets are twin scroll yes? So to work efficiently they need twin scroll manifold which can be pricey or time consuming to make?Comment

Then again vs HX35S 340hp @4000rpm. The old antique h1e cant be compared to a "modern" GT30xx.

Have post it two times already in this thread, but here you go: http://koti.mbnet.fi/pro-ht/Audi_URS...super_dyno.pdf
Here is also a HX40S boost graph:

What is the rest of the spec on the car with the HX35 super?Comment
.Don't forget boost also depends not only from turbo
.Pistons compression ratio, inlet and exhaust manifolds, head flow, cams and event intercooler with piping
