    Can't fire Up the quattro!

the quattro has given up the ghost. it's a 1985 car, 10v turbo (WR). i left it at my pal's garage recently to have the radiator re-cored and it was giving him grief all week when trying to start. this was before he even opened the bonnet so i can't think that he's disturbed anything in there.

the car has recently been great at starting, both when hot and cold thanks to the recent boost leak test/ fix. however, for no good reason it's suddenly appalling to start on the verge of flattening the battery. when it fires up it's running as normal.

i put it into the garage across the road - they have some vintage rallying experience and are very familiar with the set up, but they are starting to scratch their heads now. having done all of the obvious things, the next on the list is to have the starter out and to check that the timing pin is still present, but of course the crank position sensor is seized in place!

anyway, tell me that i'm wrong to consider this is the source of the trouble: i bought this coil from ebay around three weeks ago - the car ran for at least two weeks without incident.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NGK-IGNITI...item485819cdbc

the mechanic tells me that although the spark is often weak and intermittent, he doubts that even this coil (which as it turns out isn't even for a ur quattro) isn't the source of the trouble.

does anyone have a magic wand that they can post to me, please?!

It's almost never the ECU and if there's a spark then it's probably fuel, maybe fuel pump.

What kind of quattro? WR, or MB? Or is this an early S car with a dizzy?

Ecu s do fail.i lost injector output on mine and had to send it off for rebuild
        That was an ABY though
        Is yours getting fuel?
Hear the pump? Or crack open fuel line as check flow?
Take top off pump relay and hold points closed-does it run

Did you pull any of the spark plug leads out while having someone else to crank up the engine for you to see if there's current running through the leads? It may be that the new ignition coil you installed has failed.

An 85 ur will be K Jet, unless it's had a 20v swap. Or unless he's talking about his S6, we don't know.

If it's a WR and only spark plug no 1 is sparking weakly once per revolution then it's hall sensor failure or maybe dizzy timing has slipped.

I'm no expert Craig but it sounds to me like the spark aint getting through properly, so I'd hedge my bets on the coil...good luck with it anyway...

Piston in the injection distribution head is stuck. Clean it with carb cleaner and it'll be good as new.

Possible G40 hall sender, behind the cam wheel at the front of the rocker cover. it sends a signal for top dead centre so the ecu knows where it is, and then the engine will start. No signal no start,. Unless while turning it over again ,and again, it happens to stop at + - tdc. Then it will start till the next time. It can be tricked into starting by pouring a little water down the back of the cam belt cover. There is a how to on hear.
It may not be your problem but that is what happened to my s6.

The eBay link is for Ur Quattro part, so his Ur has died, not his S6. Hope you find the problem, Craig.

I did not know he owned a ur, as most of the post just lately have been about an s6.

thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming please! i'll copy, paste and print them for the mechanic.

it's too bad it died down here or i would have put it into james lundy in linwood for the magic treatment.

anyway, i'm delighted that the local mechanic is keen and honest about his findings. i apologised for it hanging around his place for this long, but he said that he likes it sitting in there - he has had two offers to buy it this week!!

Rotor arm shorted to dizzy? Had that a few years back. Cap off and hold the king lead on top of the rotor and turn it over.
