Weigh k jet if you bridge fuel pump relay so it runs continuousLy then lift metering head with injector pulled out you should see a continuous mist of fuel. If you have fuel spark and compression it should fire as there are very few electrics.
with k jet you need specialist pressure ttesting kit which is hard to come by these days.

Also accumulator failing and restricting flow is common.

Are you familiar Phil Paynes old site - Isham research, it has loads of useful info on diagnostics for the WR.

The extract below suggest you are probably right about it not being the coil.

•If the ECU is not satisfied with its inputs, it will fire #1 cylinder erratically to demonstrate that the output stage and coil are in working order.

Is it trying to start or is it just turning over without firing at all.

Sparking erratically I think you said.

yup, that's what the mechanic said. it turns over for an absolute age occasionally coughing and chugging as if it's going to fire, but eventually you get the fear that you're frying the starter and decide to call it quits!

I had a similar problem though mine is a V6 ABC engine. The engine refused to start. The starter would spin and there was fuel but there was no spark, sometimes the starter wouldn't turn at all (and all lights in the cabin and the instrument cluster would go dim). Turned out it was an earth point on the hall sender (G40 I think it is) that had gone loose. Tightened it and everything seems to be working OK now.

the mechanic tells me that although the spark is often weak and intermittent, he doubts that even this coil (which as it turns out isn't even for a ur quattro) isn't the source of the trouble.

Did you determine that you do have a regular spark?
Referring back to the coil that you bought (which 'isn't for a ur')- back in the final years before full engine ECU's became the norm, some manufacturers were using a Ballast-Resisted coil (basically an 8 or 9v coil that ran through a ballast resistor from the 12v system; other than when the starter was being operated, at which time the coil was over-volted with direct 12v.) Is it poss that you have one of these coils, and are feeding it with 12v?? It won't last long......

                      I've known it happen before.

No signal no start,. Unless while turning it over again ,and again, it happens to stop at + - tdc. Then it will start till the next time. It can be tricked into starting by pouring a little water down the back of the cam belt cover. There is a how to on hear.
It may not be your problem but that is what happened to my s6.
I'm sure the WR didn't have one- the timing sender is on the flywheel (in a similar position to that on the ABY) from memory.

Yeah with the UR the hall sensor is in the dizzy. Hall sensor is probably the problem, or the dizzy gear is stripped.

That coil is definitely not the correct one, probably caused the failure of the ignition module (small box on top of a heat sinc).

Get the proper WR/WX coil in there, then do the proper diagnostics using the factory manuals:

Even thought they are for WX, when it comes to ignition they are both identical.

                            Hope this helps.

thanks for that for that information, chaps. the quattro still isn't fired up. the engine position sensor is seized in there and the chaps are tentatively undoing it a very little at a time in the hope that it doesn't shear in there. they have bought a new one and seem convinced that it's to blame. i'll put forward those ideas of your's to them and they can go down that route if the EPS isn't the answer.

thanks also for those links to the audi manuals - i'll save them to disc and hand them in at the garage too.

                              keep you posted!
