  • MFTS delete?

Has anybody got rid of the MFTS and just used a VDO temperature sender (about £10) to feed the dash gauge?

Thought about it. Just needs an adaptor for the threads.

Any idea what the MFTS thread is?

The VDO senders I have seen are 1/8 NPT or M10.

          Perfect, thanks Val.

You can get M14x1.5 to M10x1 or 1/8NPT for about £6 on ebay.

I think I will try it out when I have the intake manifold off.

Just need to see if the water temp guage in the dash works with a standard VDO temp sender then.

            034919369C is the AAR/AAN/ABY/ADU F76 MFTS.

The F76 Multifunction temperature sender has different functions in the ABY and ADU than the AAN. For all three, the MFTS is the sender for the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster. On the ABY/ADU, the MFTS is also connected to the ECU via pin 46 of the T55 ECU connector. Using this pin as a high temp alarm (> 119 C) - the ECU cuts off active boost control as a safety measure. Eliminating that signal might freak out the ECU.

As log as the aftermarket sensor scaling is right for the dash gauge should be fine.
The ECU won't give a ****. Hence why disconecting the MFTS proves a false overtemp alarm as an ECU boost cut

I have the MFTS unplugged just now as it gives a false overheat signal to the ecu (new MFTS, new plug, new pins).

I could de pin/cut the other wires from the MFTS, but if a £10 sensor works reliably I would rather just use that. (I have had a few MFTS that over read). I know I am loosing a safety feature, but its more hassle than its worth to me.

The aftermarket VDO is 40-120*c, ours are 50-120+ (numbers in the gauge). There are also universal 0-150*c senders.

I have ordered an adapter and a sender so we will see what happens.

Cool. It's a useless safety feature. If you are that retarded you ignore your gauge and the auto check alarm you deserve a ****ed engine

                    I forgot to update this

                    Adapter and sender

The adapter is not threaded all the way through so the sender threads bottom out on the adapter, need to get an 1/8 npt tap I guess.

Does anybody know what the terminal type on the sender is called?

Figured it out, its a nail head style connector, a female spade connector slips into it sideways.

A better solution is the 2-pin sensor used on most of B2 cars, it has both gauge and idiot light (for the Check system) outputs and used the same M10 thread as the above mushroom sensor. might as well keep at least 2 of the 3 functions..
I'll try to find the P/N tomorrow (at work now..

That would be good if its not mega expensive, if you can find the part number it would be great
