    Found On Roadside Dead

    Timing has shifted?

Did you check the camshaft marks against the Flywheel "0" mark?

      Yeh, what he said. Lol
When I replaced the head for my running fault I replaced the lower sprocket as it was literally in my hand and when I looked at it, the key was starting to crack! Check using the flywheel mark at least buddy.

Get the cps led tested.Very simple to show if you have a good sensor.

pic of cam sensor reading attached. I should have increased the time/div so it could be seen repeatedly on the pic. I dont have a dual trace so I will have to do a bit of digging tomorrow. The car was running and I pulled over and turned it off after a drop in power. No stuttering or misfire just a drop in power. More tomorrow.

if timing appears to be ok there is a good chance the keyway on your crank sprocket has sheared off, timing appears spot on but when the car is being started it knocks it out just enough to not let it start, sounds very similar to what happened to an s6 of mine

The cause of it is due to muppets being allowed to do timing belt changes,ie not tightening the crank bolt up correctly

Or using a rattle gun on the crank bolt.

I came across this on RE2500's ABY converted CQ, it was still running fine but the timing marks didn't line up, he was pretty lucky it hadn't shat itself, the key key way fell off the crank sprocket when we removed it.

I had this on a Golf G60 once too but the key had wedged itself and the whole bottom pulley was crooked!

Keyway had broken off the sprocket, timing was about 6 teeth out. Replaced sprocket, re-timed, car now running. Whew. Mechanical malfunction and a lucky escape.

                            Long live the forum!!

That keyway had been on the move for a while by the look of it. I would stress that everyone should check this as the effort it takes to check it is small compared to the alternative.

these engines are pretty hardy. ive had 2 cam sprocket teeth sheer and alos a broken cam between 3 and 4. stuck valves open on one. no damage.

                              I classed myself as fortunate.

                              glad its sorted

Today is a good day, 4 hours of messing about and now the fuel lines are done and the car survived the timing slip. Goes like the clappers. Good car.
