Just ordered the Meyle breather part to try.
AAN camcover breather relocation.

A top mounted breather must be better than a rear mounted one (assuming a cam does not just throw oil at it), so that would be stage 1 (the fact that the Audi works cars are top mount would indicate it might be a good idea)
The block breather seems more difficult, harder to access to experiment and has a large volume of free oil.
Would an inline ball float valve work vertically in the crank breather, so vapour goes out, oil surges, lifts the ball, and shuts the crank vent. (then relying on the head breather whilst the crank is shut)
Under extreme surge situations some drain holes should be free for vapour to rise through the block as the oil will all be piled up in the side/back/front of the head.
A large oil reservoir could also be mounted on the crank vent so surge is caught, and then drained back in, however the oil is then missing from the sump under a high rpm/G situation which might not be great for the engine, I would rather keep the oil in the sump if possible.Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

Hank turned the whole valve cover into a massive baffle, apparently no oil comes through this. Block breather is tied into the head.

So for a diyable version vent or two on the top of the cam cover (splash shielded as needed), (oil cap if the one Andy gets works).
Tie the crank into the head via a surge tank? Ball float valve? Straight pipe?Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

Would something like this allow enough air flow around the ball if you slipped a silicone piper over it? Or maybe better fitting that inside a metal tube, with a silicone coupler onto the crank vent, the vent hose onto the top of the valve?

Well i spent the whole new year holidays and reading all the threads.IIRC this issue has been first addressed since 2003 by Doug RS2.
mostly the peoples who're running the swirl pot and catch tank seems to eliminate the stock one way valve under the intake manifold.
the point i was drawing the outline for my car applications since i would like to retain the "vacuum" under the idle/overun on my car.
Why?
1.when i removed the one way valve under the intake manifold i found i got too low vacuum from the turbo inlet caused the blowby
coming off when i removed the oil filler cap, dipstick or Oil separator(Mann Provent200).i don't like the peoples just come to ask if your engine is blown.

2. i found if the stock one way valve was at the stock place(actually i didn't mean to move the one way valve just changing the inlet place for it).Under load(Boost),the blowby/oil/fumes/gasses or whatever
will be flowing to the Catch Tank from the 2 inlets on my drawing....BUT When the throttle is suddenly closed, the substantial vacuum
created by the intake manifold will drool up those blowby/oil/fumes/gasses.Especially,the oil that might have left inside the junction box, pipe and have not yet through the catch tank will be drooled up and causing some smoke after sudden closed throttle condition. On my drawing i decided to
plug off the pipe end from the junction box to under intake manifold.I might be using
the hose and connect from the stock one valve and conntect it to the catch tank outlet paralleled to the outlet that going to Provent 200.
As a side note,I still have a vacuum inside the PCV and make sure the engine digested only the fumes w/o oil.Any comments please chime in.Personally,i will see once i relocated the the rocker cover outlet to the center of the cover and baffled it.
if no more oil coming out, relocate the one way valve inlet is totally unnecessary.Feel free to comment please.Last edited by popdemonic; 4 January 2015, 12:49.one of a few I5 from Asia.Comment

I think what you are suggesting will reduce the oil from the cam cover breather, but you will still have the same issue you currently have with the block breather?
Are you going to weld a fitting on the cam cover?Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

Andy,
I guess your block breather=crankcase breather not blockage on the system right?
I already had the sump baffled.I'm not much worried about the oil surge from the
crankcase atm.I believe with the stock windage tray plus the baffle is overkilled now.
all i really need to verify. the oil is really coming out the rocker cover?i'm planning to
do the same investigation like Rusty(Andy C) has been done a few years ago by connected the hose on the rocker cover 14mm outlet and put another end into a drinking water bottle and give it a few hard pulls.
Yes,I'm planing to mods my rocker cover.i'm going to drill the rear of the cover in the opposite side with 14mm outlet.Inserted the 25mm tube until another end reached to the center of the rocker cover and also baffled it.By doing this,it's going to eliminate
the slosh effect on both accelerating(front open) and braking(rear open)one of a few I5 from Asia.Comment

Venting into bottles and see what you collect would seem sensible and a simple way of checking.
I would try a hard right hand turn to test the crank case breather as well.
I will be interested to see your vent tube.Current-2004 Impreza PPP wagon

here's my repost photo after the night of hard driving on street.

i removed the union rubber hose after the 14mm outlet from the rocker cover.
i have topped up the new motor oil before out for a street race with friends
and found this in the morning.i also asked my friend when he drove the car
left behind.he said he occasionally saw a puff of bluish smoke out the exhaust tips.
i also investigated the one way valve under the intake manifold also found
dips of motor oil deposited behind the throttle.on the turbo inlet a very slightly amount of motor oil was there but i believe no motor oil left inside the X-pipe.
i believe some of oil escaped to the one way valve not to the turbo inlet side since
i plumbed the Provent 200 before the turbo inlet.i'd say the Provent 200 was doing
its job nicely to prevent the oil surge got back into the turbo inlet.the filter on the Prvent 200 is full of the oil surge though.i believe in my case if i could eliminate the
extra oil surge from the either head or crankcase(I guess it's from head).the Provent 200 might be good enough to separate fumes and some oil vapour(not oil surge).
my plan is going to block off the original 14mm outlet behind the rocker cover since
it's going to split out the oil anyway due to the outlet was at the lowest point of the head.i'm gonna use 25mm(bigger cross section=reduce air velocity) pipe as the same size of the Provent200 inlet.By doing this i don't need to be messing with the pipes/hoses reducer due to variation sizes of the pipes/hoses.i have read a lot of writeups from Chaps and going to sum up pros, cons and apply on my personal applications.one of a few I5 from Asia.Comment

talking about the breathable base filler cap from VW Tdi..i don't think that would ever work out on C4.the hood clearance is the issue.Though we install the lower oil filler cap version per Rusty's linky.FYI.one of a few I5 from Asia.Comment

Retaining the one-way valve means keeping the PCV valve and taking a lot more care of where things are placed, sealed up etc. etc. Ditch it, as the air going to the turbo creates a small, low pressure zone, which encourages flow of gas through the simplified system.Cheers'en, AndyC

OK,for those who couldn't imagine how much blowby underload on AAN.see this video lol.I removed the valve under the Provent 200 cap(venting to Atmosphere).
