    RS2 K26/7 conversion ID help????

Having picked up the best example of an RS2 I could find for the money I've been going through various maintenance job's on the car. The old girl was stood for a couple of years so I've been bringing her back to life with the utmost care. I MOT'd her last week with no advisories and the car is in excellent overall condition apart from the exhaust system which is on it's last legs and some minor paint issues. It is exceptionally straight and original other than being lowered and there was some mention of maybe MTM chips.

It had fresh oil just before being laid up so I figured it would make sense to do a few miles then drop it out before refilling with Fuch Pro S 10W50, essentially using the stuff in there as a flush. I also added a cleaning agent to the coolant and am going to drop that today then flush the system through thoroughly before refilling with fresh VAG Orange juice.

Anyway, I popped the airbox off yesterday to conduct a leak test and got a surprise.

The car went to GTi engineering on 08/07/1996 having covered 10K miles and again on the 25/08/1998. I have a stamps from them in my service book along with a FSH from Audi up until 2007, the car has covered very few miles since then and appears to have been moth balled, though it has receipts for oil changes and a cambelt ect up until 2011 when the car was taken off the road and dry stored.

The conversion is carried out to a very high standard, until I got the airbox off there was little to give away that anything had been done. But now I've got it apart I can see they had to use a 3B MAF to turbo hose and modify the solid oil breather pipe to get it to clear the oil and water lines which have also been tweeked slightly.

The turbo is in excellent condition, she flew through the MOT emission's test and has no fault codes stored after driving a couple of hundred miles.

I'm not sure whether to leave the conversion in place or put it on my Coupe and revert the RS2 to stock using the nearly new RS2 turbo I have fitted to my 3B along with some stock RS2 chips. I have a spare ABY ECU that I was going to upgrade to RS2 spec and use on my Coupe in future when I convert to coils so I could then use the software currently in my RS2 ECU.

Edit. The cold side has 5327 10150 65 on it in case you can't make it out in the pic.

Get some pictures of the car put up!!

Can't really help with the turbo but if it were me I'd be going back to the RS2 turbo, possibly with a billet wheel. A mapped RS2 is about as good as it gets for a road car

      Interesting find!

      What injectors does it have?

I would have thought the RS2 would have more value as a stock car to most collectors, and you have all the bits to do it if needed. Get it running properly and see what it feels like anyway.

Pic's of the car will follow shortly, I meant to take some yesterday but got side tracked when I discovered the above. It was pretty grubby when I got it so I wanted to wait until I'd at least got her clean.

There's quite a story attached to how I came acquire the car and I'm going to write it up in full detail when I get time, I've been concentrating on working on the car. Guess I could give you a taster though.

Yeah, I'm airing towards putting it back to stock but will sort all the leaks, fit a boost gauge and see what it goes like before making my mind up, Jeffer has (had?) the same turbo on his RS2 and I'm waiting to see if he responds.

          Yep that's the plan

Checked the injectors, their stock, so it can't be pushing out much more than 360 BHP, it doesn't feel any more laggy than my mates stock examples but does feel very torquey.

Really pleased for you mate and I am really looking forward to seeing this "restoration" project
Personally I'd swap your stock RS2 turbo off the coupe and keep the RS2 OEM. Keep your coupe as the performance beast
That being said, this historic conversion is now part of the history of the car and it is OEM+ so..... it could go either way.

Cheers Alex, I'm chuffed with the car and not worried about this surprise, I wonder if the conversion was officially sanctioned by Audi UK? GTI engineering used to do well regarded conversions with the consent of VAG UK for customers back in the late 1980's and had an excellent reputation. Sadly Brian Rickets and Richard Lloyd have both passed away so there's no chance of contacting either of them for details, coincidently Brian Rickets did the Nothelle conversion on my Coupe back in 1990.

It could go either way as you say but I think it probably makes more sense to keep the Coupe as my crazy wagon and revert the RS2 to stock.

First thing is to get all the leaks sorted and see how it actually performs and what it boosts to etc.

If that turbo is identical to Jeffers one than it looks like it has a 3070G compressor wheel. That was fitted to Porsche 930 and BMW 745i models of early 80's vintage. On the boost chip (LDR) it looks as though they have indicated the turbine size #6. However to be definitive you would have to remove and measure the various components!
The chips appear to predate either of the two visits listed!

Thanks for the input Robin, as you say I'd have to disassemble the unit and measure the various components to be sure but it does appear to the same as Jeffers unit externally at least. Yep, I noticed the chips predate the first visit to GTI Engineering by over a year, my guess is the package was put together some time before being fitted. I'd be more concerned if they were dated after going there, the car went to Audi for regular servicing four times between the two visits.

What is a bit odd is that the chips are dated the very same day as the pre delivery inspection on the 10/02/95, the car was handed over to the first owner on the 01/03/95 that could purely be coincidence though.

This afternoon with a bit of help from Charlie (thanks mate) I put it back together with no boost leaks, unusually everything connected to the inlet manifold was fine. However there was air pissing out all over the place on the ribbed inlet boot's various connections and the thing itself was very perished, also had leaks from both the turbo to IC hose connections caused by degraded clips . Fortunately I had a good 3B boot to hand so I took all the hoses off between the turbo and solid inlet pipe, cleaned them inside and out and refitted with replacement OE jubilee clips where required. I also had to replace the small bore pipe to the diverter valve, I'm going to do them all soon as well as treat the car to a set of plain black Roose hoses as a couple are in poor shape.

I'm guessing it's acceptable to use plain silicone main hose's on a restoration? I'll be using the OE type crimp clips and small bore stuff and factory jubilee clips on the rest.

I had to vent the oil breather to atmosphere as a temporary measure as there's a leak in the system somewhere just above the Darleks head and I didn't have time to take all that apart as well. Figured that to be preferable to having unmetered air entering the system, sorting this is the next job on the list

It now goes really well, feels very strong indeed above 4K RPM, if I had to guess I'd put it around the 350BHP mark, peak boost is 1.5 bar which is available at 3.5K and it tappers to just over a bar at the red line. It's obviously not an amateur cobble up anyway.

Ran out of time for pic's of the car again today, I will be starting a proper resto thread ASAP.

However in the mean time I'd like to thank Eric (IrishS2) for offering me car and coming to what I reckon was a fair deal both ways.

Don't worry I have actually cleaned the car, I was going start the resto thread this weekend but yesterdays discovery side tracked me somewhat.
