    Unfolding the ECU

    Hi guys,

I have taken the ECU out of my car today to check to see if my chipset is soldered or push fit, I have taken the PCB's out of the case but don't want to try anything too drastic to unfold them without some advice on doing so. I want to change over to TFSI coil packs and remap, I was planning on buying PRJ's chipset but want to, if possible avoid sending my ECU away.

    Any info much appreciated.

I watched a chap on YouTube unfold a motronic one when I did mine.

Also Dave (UrS4boy) has a post on it somewhere. I hated opening mine as I didn't want to break it.

First you have to separate the boards, there are 1 or 2 nylon pegs with a thin locking pin through the middle, push the locking pin out first, pop the corners apart opposite the connector. now it's just the connector that's holding the 2 boards together.
grip the 2 boards just behind the connector and look into the connector shell where the pins are.
At each end there is a small black plastic tab, slip a tiny screwdriver behind this at one end whilst squeezing the two boads together gently with the other hand, and you should see one row of pins get closer to the other two rows, keep squeezing. Now slip the screwdriver behind the tab at the other end of the connector and the same thing will happen.
The top board should now slide out the back of the connector complete with it's row of pins.

Here is a link to the video. The link to Bob Myer's pdf has already been posted.

Are some of them push-fit from the factory? (92' UrS4 here) I never bothered opening mine as I was banking on it being a solder job. However if it is just a case of putting a new chip in, then I might have a re-think!

Some of the early 92 UrS4s, especially the ones with the "tuna can" dizzy for the cam position Hall sender, were socketed from the factory. I think they wanted to be able to change the software/chips if there were issues. At some point they stopped with the sockets and soldered the chips directly to the boards.

Factory sockets in an April 92 build 92 (which is after the mid-February switch away from the tuna can to the front of the engine):

I had a complete nightmare putting the ECU back into position however, a point to note is that it is so much easier to remove the glovebox to give yourself some more space and pull back the carpet, as far as you can, including taking the most forward plastic trim in the footwell. Be very careful not to snag the loom with the sharp edges of the chassis of the ECU.

Bon courage and thanks for your help folks!
