rs2 fuel pump

Thanks, UrS4boy. I am not a mechanic nor mechanically minded - just trying to figure this out. I have a mechanic visiting on Tuesday evening so hopefully he will have more of a clue than I do. The reason I think it is the G28 is that the car was running faultlessly until a few months ago. Then it decided to crank but not start. A mechanic sprayed carb cleaner onto the G28 and it started first time after that - he suggested then I replace the G28 as soon as possible but I did not. It took me a few weeks to find, order and receive a new replacement G28 (Facet 9.0066 for £31, not fitted yet). 2 months and 350 miles later the car again decided to crank but not start. The battery is fine (1 year old Bosch S5 and fully charged according to a CTEK battery conditioner). Nothing else has been fitted or changed (no recent aftermarket additions; no re-timing or repositioning). Everything else seems to be fine. So, if the car works faultlessly one day but cranks without starting the next, I am assuming it must be one of the items I mentioned. Probably the G28 as that was the one part that apparently prevented the car starting recently. If it is the G4 and not the G28, it doesn't matter as the new Facet 9.0066 can be the G28 or the G4 (same part AFAIK). I will post again when the mechanic has been and I know what the problem is / how it was fixed. Hopefully VAG-com / VCDS will highlight the problem straight away. I have no diagnostic equipment so am just guessing without it. If I was a mechanic I would test the fuel pump but I lack the ability / confidence to do that.Comment

Once upon a time I took a ferry from Vancouver Island and drove to Sooke (west of Victoria) for an evening meeting. Everything was fine. When I came out at 10:30 PM to go to my B&B, the car would not start despite cranking and cranking and cranking. One flat bed trip to Victoria, a bus ride to Vancouver, two ferry trips and a bus ride back to Victoria and $1000 later, it was the fuel pump. Thanks, UrS4boy. Don't spend any money on the G28 until you've confirmed the fuel pump is working. A G28 failure code *ALWAYS* shows up when codes are pulled with the engine off (good for mechanics, bad for gullible customers).

It was the G28 Engine Speed Sensor that had failed. It had lasted over 20 years and over 147,500 miles in which there must have been goodness knows how many starts. Once the original G28 had been replaced by the new Facet 9.0066 (£31 from Amazon), the RS2 started first time. No fault codes. It runs very smoothly. If anyone happens to fit a Facet 9.0066 to an RS2 (as a G28 or G4 replacement), please note that the Facet 9.0066 comes with a small soft ring and a small hard ring on the sensor (at the end with the hole for the 5mm hex bolt). Presumably these rings are to create a seal if the part is used on a car where a seal is required (to prevent oil leaking out). On the RS2 the G28 is attached to a bracket, so to get a snug fit the small soft ring and the small hard ring were not required. I hope this makes sense. So, no fuel pump issues for my RS2 yet (although I understand it could have been the fuel pump this time and could be the fuel pump next time). I have tried starting the car a few times this evening and it has started quickly first time on each occasion. It idles well too.Comment

Well that is *almost* a first. A real G28 death, not just a code that says it's dead.
Congrats on finding and fixing the problem.
BTW, the Facet 9.006 is "Temporarily out of stock" (you might have got the last one).

Thanks for the info and part numbers from everybody on here. rxl i would like to fit a new pump but if the cap on top of the fuel tank is not cracked and is for sale and also the banjo bolt attachment in the right of the photo i would love to buy them. I don't know what a fair price is though.
Is the 044 fuel pump a simple swap? If so I may just go with one of them as the rs2 ones for sale on eBay are around $440 australian dollars and I can get a bosch 044 pump here for around $180 Australian dollars.Comment

There is a thread on here about fitting the Bosch its not a straight swap but easy enough, need to change the basket and adapt slightlyThanks for the info and part numbers from everybody on here. rxl i would like to fit a new pump but if the cap on top of the fuel tank is not cracked and is for sale and also the banjo bolt attachment in the right of the photo i would love to buy them.
