    Core plug!

Oh FFS, still it's probably a good thing this happened this evening while I was out for a little fun and only a half mile away, rather than Saturday on the circuit or the M4 at 80mph..

Is that a head off or engine out job to get to?

that looks like a seriously unpleasant job to fix!
you're definitely lucky to be so close to home when it popped, otherwise it would've been a flatbed ride home

My guess is you run a big metal screw into the center of the defective plug and then use the screw to help pry out the plug.

I was having fun getting one of these out of a head on the bench the other day. Good news is there is no step in the hole behind it so you can use a punch to knock it sideways then pop it out

Make sure to have a new water pipe flange in either plastic or metal, the one that is lower down the back of the engine underneath your core plug, as you'll probably put pressure on the exiting one, as it is no doubt old and has lots of heat cycles, and it will then fail a while later when you don't want it to, so as you're "in there" definitely do it.

I was thinking that, it's a 3B so probably the metal original..

On the list of nightmare jobs to do, that is right up there with the best of them. Getting the old plug out is easy enough, pressing the new one is going to be a real challenge. If you get stuck one of these might get you going..
