    UrS6 - Wastegate Membrane Query

Is it possible to determine if there is a fault with the wastegate's membrane without taking it apart ?

If the small nuts on the top the waste gate are taken off and the 'lid' taken off, presumably the membrane can then be taken off and examined ?

When the membrane is examined in one's hand, what faults are the 'normal' faults that the membrane suffers from ?

If the membrane is faulty, what will be the nature of the symptoms that might alert a driver to such issues with the membrane ?

Sorry if these questions sound 'simple', but I haven't yet BTDT, and wanted not to make any needless mistakes.

Also and lastly, sorry if this has been covered before.

    Thanks.

Suck the nipple and see if it holds vacuum. Use a Mityvac if you have one, if not just suck and stick you tongue on the end.

If there is a leak/tear, etc in the membrane, when you apply a vacuum to the nipple on the wastegate cap, it won't hold a vacuum. If it holds, the membrane is probably just fine. Easier than disassembling to visually inspect the membrane.

Hope it isn't ripped because New OE 035145797B membranes are NLA

someone posted on FB not long time ago that 034 will have it soon
034Motorsport is pleased to offer this Upgraded External Wastegate Diaphragm for Early Audi I5 10V/20V Turbo Engines, including the MC, 3B, AAN, ABY, and ADU. We carried the factory replacement diaphragm for 10 years before Audi decided to discontinue it. In that time, our engineers had the opportunity to develop and test a stronger, more durable replacement. The result is this polyester reinforced, high-temperature silicone diaphragm, which is over 50% thicker than the factory unit and capable of performing in high-temperature, high-boost applications. Replaces factory part number 035145797B.
