    Blue RS2 oil pressure drop

As some of you may have seen in my Mental Wheels project thread I bought another RS2 with 'problems'. When the engine came up to operating temperature the oil pressure dropped. The car was sold to me as the previous owner couldn't diagnose the problem whatever he did.

So I took it to Will at VRS who stripped it down and found a banana shaped head with bad valve seats and a head gasket that had gone across all 5 cylinders.

Plus the oil looked like this:

So valve seats were re-cut and head skimmed and engine put back together:

All seemed well, head was perfect - no cracks or anything ...until the oil pressure dropped again wtf!!!

After another strip down Will discovers this black gasket which doesn't have a hole like the new paper gasket so he thinks he's found the problem,

...only there's no hole on the pump there anyway... wtf... back to the drawing board.

In the end he tries a different pump which for whatever reason seems to work!

I asked what he thought the problem was and he said he thought maybe the tolerances were too tight. These pictures show some wear marks indicating a tight fit, and apparently the inner darker gear is supposed to be slightly proud but was flush with the outer gear:

So anyway, now the thing works it time to see what's what... onto the dyno!!:

It's running rich and was misfiring under load which produced a very squiggled result but the best one knocked out 289bhp, not bad...:

...so hopefully after some fiddling around tomorrow she'll hit the magic 311bhp!!!

In the meantime Kit's going to help me fix the clutch problem in my other green RS2...

    Good on you and Will.

    Thanks for 'bothering' to sharing.

These threads / posts increase everyone's knowledge to keep these cars at their best.

Mine is back to the way it should be, for the time being, was hesitating under wot after a minutes running. Turned out one of the black standalone coils had 'failed' once it started to heat up even a bit. Such a sweet fix, once it is found. Thanks mcandmar.

        PS Pferdestärke vs SAE Hp.

        315 PS = 310.565826072495 hp

Do a quick conversion: 1 pferdestarkes = 0.98592325737265 horsepower using the online calculator for metric conversions.

          Seriously???

Well in any case, rounded up to the nearest whole, what does that give you? Anyway you'll forgive me if my conversion app on my phone quoted me 311.117071hp based upon the 232kW that is quoted on the car itself:

...no doubt you'll 'correct' me with your own data as my app shows 315PS as 310.691297hp

*edit: oops, sorry, I missed the post above yours, I thought you were having a dig at the quoted output I gave

Duh. Please check your details before dissing me. I was *TRYING* to support you against mac2226, if you'd taken the time to notice who I quoted.

All that said, I am not sure which came first, 232 kW or 315 PS. Based on EU rules, I would have to go with 232 kW since "In 1972, the PS was rendered obsolete by EEC directives, when it was replaced by the kilowatt as the official power measuring unit. It is still in use for commercial and advertising purposes, in addition to the kW rating, as many customers are still not familiar with the use of kilowatts for engines."

Great photo's and data Charlie, good on you for taking the time to write up such a comprehensive analysis of the problems with great photo's. I'm sure Will will get the car running spot on, if it pulled 289 with a likely ignition fault then she should be well on mark once corrected.

We'll have your other car on the road soon with a super clean engine bay!

Yeah, as I said to you last night he's gonna stick the coil packs from Mental Wheels on and check a couple other things and then see what it puts out. MW is getting some TFSI leads I think.

I'll see you in a few hours.

Finally got my blue car back today with Kits help, it really feels weird driving a LHD after not driving one for a few years, the last time I was driving LHD cars I was either in Europe or the Middle East where you're supposed to be on that side... I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow to try and get the feel for it again.

The coil packs from Mental Wheels went on and the car now puts out a healthy 314hp & 336lbs/ft of torqueyness

Just needs a bit of polish now... amongst a few other things...

Apart from the crappy motorway traffic I really enjoyed the journey back especially the A roads from Worcester onwards, particularly the last few miles when I got a chance to open the car up properly. I'm more familiar with LHD drive cars on UK roads but it still took me ten minutes or so after leaving Northampton to settle in and get my road position correct as it's been a while since I last drove my Corrado.

More than happy to help out mate, it was a pleasure to get a chance to drive a European spec car with the steering wheel on what is after all the correct side...albeit with a slightly saggy drivers seat.

Good on Will for getting it running spot on.
