This weekend I put the bearing in a vice and tried to drive the center out, but i was too nervous about permanent damage to clamp the $&@# out of it.
Kinda wondering (given the function/design), whether even an air hammer would move it, but I didn't see a way to press it out

Did you cut the end off the "can"? Clamping the "can" will only make trying to push out the bearing more difficult.

Maybe we need to get the "can" cut open and take photos to see what the construction inside is like.

Well, my engine is in the shop cos I'm building the bottom end; it should be done shortly so in an effort of expediency I gave another shot at clamping and punching with a heavy hammer and a drift. The "can" simply cracked in my vice, so that was that. So what is inside (pics to follow, photobucket seems to have taken a dump), in order:
        Metal backed rubber dust cap
        Nylon ball bearing cage
Ball bearings appear to be 1 - 1.5cm
        Air gap
        Nylon roller bearing cage
        Roller bearings (1-1.5cm diameter x 3cm length)
        Metal backed dust cap(presumably)

I believe if you have a set of picks you can remove the dust seal and pick out the ball cage. The rest would probably just slide apart. Cleaning and repackaged could foreseeably work

            Voilà.
This is the only one I took but I'll snap a few more angles and maybe separate it this evening. Was in a bit of a hurry yesterday

                Exploded View of Idler Bearing

I wish I had seen the previous picture before starting the dissection of the hub bearing. Perhaps I could have avoided the ensuing carnage. Removing the fan mounting hub went well enough. Should have attempted to remove the seal & then the plastic roller bearing cage. Anyway this is the "Exploded View" of the idler bearing assembly.

Second picture is of the set screw installation to retain the new bearing.

                Cheers

Thanks for posting that. We're all learning here. So the first two dissections were a little brutish. What we are (at least I am) learning is the housing itself is indeed the outer race for both the roller bearing and the ball bearing. Any insight into the construction order? I am guessing that the roller bearing is installed first, then the shaft and then the ball bearing (from the other end), then whatever retaining clips are there and then fan flange is pressed on to the shaft (other end of the shaft firmly supported). Final step would be the dust cover (?) at the end opposite the flange.

I would say that the central shaft would be installed first followed by the ball bearings. The plastic cage would locate the ball bearings & the shaft axially when snapped in to place. There is no axial load on the roller bearing, it is free to rotate along the shaft, held in position by the roller bearing cage & this in turn is held in by the seal . There were no snap rings present.
I was hearing a noise from the bearing & there was too much play in the assembly to suit me. It was replaced during the timing belt service & camshaft swap.

So where did you find the replacement part (or is that an old picture)?

I agree with the above. It seems to all be held together by the ball/cage assembly. I'm pretty confident that with a set of picks you could have it apart with almost no force at all.

I purchased the bearing from GAP in California in May of 2014. The pictures of the broken bearing assembly are from this morning.
