    RS2 - High oil pressure?

I'm having an issue with my oil pressure gauge. At idle it's okay, stays right at 2 bar, but when I give the car some throttle the needle goes up quickly, before maxing the gauge at around 3000rpm. If I keep the throttle at around 2000rpm the needle in the gauge vibrates up and down around 5 bar.

Could it be the sender that's on it's way out? The engine is newly rebuilt, so there should'nt be any issues there, but the oil pressure sender is used.

5 Bar off idle at 2000 RPM sounds good to me. Since the oil pressure gauge sender is based on a rheostat inside the sender can, I suspect that the vibration is more likely be sourced at the oil pump. Sorry.

Could it be something wrong with the pressure release piston or spring? The oil pump was disassembled and cleaned when I rebuilt the engine, and everything looked alright.

Certainly a possibility. Did you get the piston installed correctly? There is only one correct way.

Found the fault! The crimp connector on the oil pressure sender wire packed it in after 20 years. Crimped on a new one, and now the pressures are A-OK! Took the car for a spin, I now got around 2 bar at idle, 3,5 bar at 1500 rpm and 5 bar right above 2000 rpm.

If someone else is going to fiddle with their oil pressure sender, remove the dipstick tube and top radiator hose for easier access.

Nice when it works out to be something simple!

I'm inspired to go check my oil temperature gauge as that flaps about between 90/100 and zero when it gets hot. The wire virtally dangling in free air that connects to the oil temp sender always struck me as being a bit vulnerable...
