TS Tuning chips and 97 RON

    Hi Guys,

My 3B will be rolling out of the garage in a couple of weeks once i get back onshore from the rigs.

    It will be running

    RS2 Turbo
    RS2 Exhaust manifold
    RS2 Intercooler
RS2 genuine injectors or 034 Motorsport replicas ( have both )
3" downpipe and exhaust, tapering down to 2.5" to gain clearance over rear diff, connected to original 3B back box
    Uprated ABY headgasket
TFSI coils and ABY ECU, still need to do (R201 resistor mod)
    044 fuel pump
    AEM wideband
TS Tuning chips previously bought from forum member.

The anticipation is getting the better of me and can barely wait to feel the difference over the normal homefry.

Now then, my question is this.

Due to my location there is no one that can live map my car even remotely closely, hence purchasing the TS Tuning chips which seem to get mixed reviews.

The best fuel we have on the island is 97 RON, the car used to run spot on with this previously on the Homefry, however is it safe enough to use with the TS Tuning chips which i believe are meant to have toned down knock control etc?

Has anyone else run this chipset on 97 or even 95 RON? and if so what are your experiences?

If anyone can suggest or even sell me some alternative chips for this setup that are known to work safely with 97 RON please enlighten me. Be good to have a few chipsets to choose from.

Don't want my pride and joy to go bang after all my time and effort getting it to this stage.

As always any help or advice greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Gordon

You could always make some det cans and go for a hard drive listening for knock. What do you do offshore? I work at onshore gas transmission stuff..

Making some det cans eh, hmm not a bad idea that. What might they look like or even be constructed from? I'm intrigued!! I work as a Mechanical / Rotating Technician in the Central North Sea.

maybe safer to run a stand alone ecu?
then you have no problems with different fuel octane......

I have no idea about stand alone ECU's actually, something i've never looked into. Hopefully a chipset known to be safe for lesser grades of fuel will do the job. It's been a slow process getting this far so the sooner i'm out on the road the better now. However hopefully not at the expense of bend rods!

Quick google search on det cans has revealed this-

How to build your own detonation cans/ear muffs to listen for engine/motor detonation pre-ignition and knock when tuning your vehicle for MBT

Lots of readily available materials i can get from the rig!!

@gmac78 - I brewed your chips for the 7400 motor tonight. Ready to send along with R201 as agreed.

Do I understand you also have an RS2 turbo equipped car or am I getting confused. Only asking as I have a good proven brew for that as well - RS2 "V-Stream"

                  Hi Paul,

That's good news on the 7400 chipset and R201, good lad!!

I'm not quite ready to test the 7400 yet so have gone for the RS2 setup first of all, then, maybe a year down the line or so once i've gotten used to the RS2 unit i plan to change over to the 7400 to see how it compares.

I was actually reading about the V stream last night so glad you chimed in about it this morning. Seems to get a good write up.

                  PM to follow my man.

My 3B is currently full RS2 spec and running an extremely aggressive 'Hoffer' chip-set which hit's 2 bar at 3K tapering to 1.5 Bar at the red line, I tried a PRJ chip set which were very good and much the same up top but reverted to to the Hoffer set as they give more punch low down and better fuel economy when cruising.

I had no choice but to use 97 Ron fuel for a large proportion of my 1800 mile tour of the far north of Scotland in April and didn't have any problems or notice much difference in performance over V-power which is my fuel of choice. BP Ultimate or Tesco Momentum being my usual second choices. I dare say there say a dyno would show a variation but the seat of my bottom said the car went just fine.

It's not like I was holding back much either as any of the other members who were on the run would attest to....

I have had to use 95 Ron occasionally where I've been caught out by my local Shell station being out of V-power along with not having enough fuel to get to anywhere else. Then there is a noticeable change in performance and I don't give the car any stick until I can get some decent fuel.

Oh yeah, I'm still on the dissy...

Thanks for input, perhaps i'm being overly cautious with buying another set of chips for my RS2 setup.

The reason for me doing this is that last night i was reading comments by PRJ stating that the TS Tuning chips have toned down knock control and were not suitable for a standard RS2 setup. This got me worrying about how they would perform with the local 97 RON which is brought to the island as 95 RON and additive added at the local refinery to bring it up to the 97 RON rating it is sold as.

My worry is that although it is being sold as 97 RON it might not be quite up to spec. Certainly the S2 when in normal homerfry guise ran spot on with the 97 RON, with not too much difference using the 95 RON.

Since i'll be pushing the old girl even harder now with the RS2 setup, i want to reduce the chances of it going bang as best i can.

I'd be interested to hear from lads who have used the TS tuning chips, to see if they ever ran lesser grades of fuel, and if so did they have any running issues.

                      Cheers
                      Gordon

I'm running TS RS2 chipset at the moment with RS2 injectors and my GT3071. I've got an eBoost controller set to give 1.5 or 1.7 Bar switchable. There doesn't seem to be any knock when using 97 on either setting. AFR drops into the 10s on full boost, so unlikely to knock I guess.
I tend to use the fat midrange mostly and rarely rev it out..
I like the eBoost cos I get full boost at part throttle and it comes in hard, I hate having to floor the throttle to get a decent amount of boost.
