    NGK Plug Gapping

    Evening All

I've purchased some NGK BKR7EIX plugs for the S2 and just checked the gaps on them. All are pre gapped to a touch over 0.70mm and were checked with a decent Sealey gapping tool. The question I have is do I gap them down to 0.60mm or leave them as is? Running RS2 spec and TS tuning Chips. What have others done with these plugs and spec combo and have you got standard or non standard coils?

    Cheers.

My understanding is they need to set at 0.60mm for correct running. It seams the wider the gap tends to lead to misfiring and boost problems higher up in the rev range. Its been documented on here where people have had these problems and all it was was an over gapped plug that when reset everything was restored to perfect running.

They will be fine at 0.7 or regap to 0.6. At that power level you shouldn't have any issues with them at either.

Thanks chaps. I've read various different threads and some are saying definitely gap down as the power goes up and others are saying they haven't gapped and had no issues but some had overheating issues with the coils after deciding to not gap. I'm running standard coils atm but have a slight hiccup around 5k so going to try the new plugs first and if that doesn't cure it go down the tfsi route or maybe the set up Alex uses.

I don't think 0,1mm difference in gapping will do anything with these plugs. If your spark dissapears with 0,7mm gap and work with 0,6mm then you must have very weak coils, and they will fail sooner or later anyway.

I've just put these spark plugs in my S6. Firstly with them gapped from factory. For normal driving they were fine, but WOT I experienced hesitation and misfire.
Re-gapped today to 0.6mm and it's running fine. It's nice knowing that I don't have the standard Bosch plugs anymore

I have used F5DPOR plugs for over 10 years on various projects and never had a misfire , always installed them as they are - no gapping .

My engine was killed by a Bosch spark plug breaking up - and this wasn't an isolated event, there are various threads on this forum around the subject.

I wouldn't even try challenge Bosch quality , there are various causes of plug failure such as lean mixture, antilag systems, rev limiter abuse ... and many more .

My brand new F5DP0R's started misfiring horribly after 1.5 months of usage. The misfire was so horrible, even the FP relay was ticking on and off during it. Successfully binned them and now riding on NGK's.

Am running Denso IK22s currently, also ran the NGKs before and worked great at .6mm. The Denso however, seem to produce a happier running engine I feel

Unless you have a load of old stock from 7-8+ years ago you are gambling with your engine. Do some research, F5DPOR have caused many engine failures due to the electrode and ceramic breaking off inside the chamber.
Bosch cheaped out on their manufacturing a few years ago and quality is not good anymore.

Russ in answer to your question, 0.7mm will be fine. Mine were all over the place out the boxes so I gapped mine to 0.6mm. Sounds like you don't need to worry

Remember never to try and re gap a used plug
