    New rad/ no aux rad...

Well, am now running around with my new rad after my recent severed top hose connector incident. I also took the opportunity to change the thermostat whilst the rad was out. I also a few months ago removed the aux rad as that was a Mr Leaky.

I wouldn't say that the ambient temperatures we're experiencing in London at the moment (late March) are fantastically warm, but I guess it's warmer than all the previous months when I've been running without the aux rad.

Basically, with the new rad installed, the car seems to be running a little hotter than it used to. The gauge now routinely sits at 2 notches above 90C, and, even in March, the cooling fan is coming in on the 1st speed when pottering around/ sitting in traffic.

I've got a 3B and have (malfunctioning again) Aircon installed.

Is 2 notches above 90 anything to be worried about? When on the move at pace (m-way cruising), it settles on 90. Oil temp and oil pressures are as normal.

I'm going to keep an eye on this, I'm worried that with summer approaching, is the cooling system going to cope with the higher temperatures? Is this telling me the new rad (from GSF) is less efficient than the old one, or perhaps the new thermostat is opening slightly later than the old? Can that be adjusted?

I don't want the car overheating that's for sure, but I'm also not entirely keen on either installing a new aux-rad, or removing the Aircon as I want that to work when the heat comes - actually I wanted it on Monday but alas...

I recently (3 days ago) removed the Aux rad + replaced the leaking Behr original rad with a Nissens rad. My data is that the temps have dropped 1 hash mark. It used to stick exactly 1 mark below 90C - winter and summer. Now it is 2 hash marks below 90C. I'm one happy camper.

This is just a datum point. But your temps sound high to me.

Thing is, several people have binned the aux rad and the car actually shows it is running cooler(plus the added bonus of a few less kg's over the front end)

Don't worry. No overheating will occur. Relax.

Rich, your multisensor is now more infected by the wind and those readings are not correct. With fully functioning 'stat the engine will not go under 90C after it has first been reached. Really.

I find that plausible. But in any case, what is interesting is relative measurement using the same sensors. Assuming more cooling of the sensor itself, I am probably not very much worse off now than with the Aux rad.

Well... I have to hi-jack this thread. So removing the aux cooler works ok you say (I can't help but wonder why on earth they put it there in the first place!) but I'm still worried. I was thinking of ditching the aux rad and put a better oil cooler in - like a small Setrab, like half-size of the aux cooler but twice the size of the stock oil cooler. Keeping the oil cool should help cool my engine too right?

I thought Nissens radiatros where just junk... I mean, aren't they dirt-cheap? At least it was to my Jetta...

If you have the climate, check channel #6. There is a raw NTP value from the climate sensor. Thermostat temp gives the value ~65. Bigger value means colder engine. This way you can double check. Another way is vagcom that tells you the temperature the ECU sees. Yet another sensor!

Channel #51 for you ABY owners. Shows coolant temp in degrees.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Nisens, search for posts on Behr rads and get the part numbers.

It will work perfectly with only the main rad, i was skeptical at first but it works well.

The aux rad was fitted to the car as it was exported to hotter climates than the UK. And some people even towed with it (WTF)!!

I run a high power car and even with no aux rad it runs at the same temps as before maybe even lower. Not one big tuning firm keep the aux rad i place IIRC.
