    7A "choking" after WOT blast

My 7A CQ20v has been running fairly well recently and I don't often really "boot it" but on occasion I have put my foot right down and it's caused a problem. I'm talking 6000rpm for 2 seconds in 2nd gear and then another 2 seconds in 3rd gear, then I ease off ( because I can't go any faster than that locally without getting myself in trouble).

What's I'm getting is a kind of "choking" afterwards. Like spurts of hesitation that I might associate with fuel issues. Even with minimal power it hesitates for a second or a split-second, frees up again for a second or so, then hesitates again.. this might go on for a few seconds and then everything's ok again. Then a few seconds or a minute later I get a bit of it again. I might manage a couple of minutes or it might keep happening every 30 seconds or so.

It did this is decent weather and it's doing it now in cold weather. But it doesn't misbehave unless I really give it the beans for a few seconds.

My initial thought is that the 26 year old fuel pump is on its last legs and after I abuse it, it's coughing like a geriatric until I let it sleep overnight to settle down. It's normally fine in the morning again (as long as I don't abuse it).

The thing is... I want to abuse it just a little bit. What the hell's the point of having a 5 pot quattro in the snow if you can't be a bit silly now and again?

    All thoughts welcome.

erm... actually that's a bloody good point and my immediate reaction was to say that I did it a few months ago but now as I ponder it I think it might have been my A4 that I did. I've had the car for a year now but it sat mostly unused for a couple of years before so I really should have changed it!

When you say choking, does it make an odd intake noise?

Don't think so matey. What are you thinking? I should perhaps recreate the issue, then stop the car, pop the bonnet and push the revs up to see/hear what happens with my head in the engine bay perhaps.

I'd be looking at fueling, so a filter change might be a good idea, if you change it make sure you have some new washers ready as the old ones probably won't seal again. Is the fuel pump noisy?

I'll get a chance to send you a email soon mate, been flat out dealing with parts!

good point on the washers mate, thanks. Let's see if I can ask for them at the local parts dept without making an *** of myself They would be rubber I guess? I can't for the life of me think what they are. I think my A4 had a metal filter and plastic clips with rubber washers/grommets.

I know you're totally up to your eyeballs with parts sales mate so no stress on sending me emails. Plus you'll no doubt be learning how to fight grizzly bears and fashion a log cabin eh?

I'm seeing if I can find a job over there next summer mate, otherwise the visa situation is a nightmare, worst comes to the worst I'm going to have a months holiday next summer and get the lye of the land. If I sold my RS2 I could possibly afford to just ****** off but there's crazy and there's uterly bonkers and I'd be a fool to sell that car now I have one.

As Alex say's you need four crush washers of the relevant size's and a either an adjustable or a couple of big spanners to hold the filter itself. I've recently changed the one on my B3 saloon along with fitting a new pump and needed 22mm and 27mm spanners along with 17m & 19mm. However some filters need other sizes so it's worth checking what you need and I think the Coupe uses a slightly diferent filter.

I seem to recall you'd get fresh washers in a little packet with a new filter but the last couple I've ordered from TPS haven't had any.

Oh yeah safey first! Remeber to discharge any pressure in the system before starting the job by loosing the feed union in the engine bay, otherwise you can get a face full of fuel.

That's a bloody good point mate. unleaded just doesn't taste great does it? I imagine that's what Satan's jism would taste like. anyhoo...

I think I'll pick up a filter from the dealer because it should hopefully have the crush washers. I have quite a range of large spanners after ending up buying loads last year whilst changing something... I can't even remember what.

I know what you mean about crazy and CRAZY. If you head out for summer you'll at least get a taster for life there and hopefully that will tell you whether it's worth being there for longer. I'm sure visas are a pain in the ***. Do you have someone there who will sign a work visa for you?
