The pump pre filter is the first thing that needs checking, if the inlet is clear and the pump still screams then the chances are that the pump is damaged from running cavitated. Bosch pumps have an internal filter at the 18mm threaded inlet, you could visually check this but I'm not sure how you'd be able to clean it.

Personally I'd swap to a aeromotive 340 because they're almost silent and supply plenty of fuel for an rs2 spec.

Lucky for me they have an outlet in South Africa.

Will first do all the checks to prove what is wrong.

375 mile and cavitation has damaged a new pump, I hope not.

I he'd exactly the same problem.Genuine ,brand new Bosch 044 from my friend shop,Fitted as per forum instructions, all ok when first fitted, but next day started to make this irritating buzzing noise like old tired pump(it wasn't as noisy when I was braking hard)I bench tested the pump, with fully charged battery, relay etc. and submerged in fuel-still making the same no acceptable noise.
My friend replaced the pump for me ,and the other one is not making any noise at all.

Removing/replacing the petrol pump strainer basket

            S2 Coupe ABY.

Has anybody removed the strainer basket when fitting an upgraded petrol pump.

I am concerned that for whatever reason this could be restricting the flow to the petrol pump thus causing cavitation.

Has anybody removed this strainer and fitted a different/larger strainer?

No worries re photo as the diagram 'reminds' me of the strainer under discussion.

Just wanted to be sure mine was clean. as well as understand which strainer it was.

Mine was either new or certainly clear so the high pitched whining sound from mine is not because of a strainer.

Irocially yesterday I had a pedestrian came up to me and tell me that I may have a puncture due to the 'hissing' noise (of the pump) from my rear tyre as they stood near by when the car was idling for a minute or two.

                  Thanks again.

Last night I took a 10 mile drive when I first started the car it was quite, when I arrived home it was whining not very loud but it was more than I would be happy with.

Will do some more tests before I open it up.

New petrol filter fitted the same time as the pump.

Will be checked when I do the flow @ pressure test.

I had the real whining noise from my 044 pump too.I went for speedflow check valve and the noise was remedy.
                          The whining was much lesser.

                              Check this filter

This is a 60 micron pre-filter, also called a fuel sock, for the Bosch Motorsports fuel pumps with an M18x1.5mm threaded inlet. This little gem will allow in-tank mounting of the popular Bosch 044 fuel pump. It comes with an anodized blue finish. Safe for use with all Ethanol based fuels as well as Biodiesel, Methanol, Etc.
