    Intake temps

Howdy everyone. Just a quick one?

Has anyone logged or just looked at any intake air temps? This is just out of curiosity really. My S6 is RS2 spec with stock (crap) smic.

On hard driving or pottering around are both welcome figure on stock or similar set up. Massive turbo set up is a bit irrelevant. Just wondered how they vary car to car.

I have some logs, I will post a graph later. That is RS2 spec boosting around 24 psi.

But intake temp (logged at OEM sensor) is around 30°C with Wagner IC and ambient temperature is around 20°C.

Thanks for that. On that kind of a day mine rises to 40 and doesn't really come down much due to the rubbish stock cooler the S6 is burdened with. I'm fitting a FMIC in next few months and hope it'll help. The car feels MUCH different from high teens/early 20's to being in the high 20's/thirties. Automark mapped it with a fair chunk of advance which I'm not getting to use once it gets some stick.

I have a large FMIC and use vems with an 1.8T temp sensor.
I see about 5 deg difference on normal driving and highway.
In traffic it may reach up to 10deg and in heatsoak conditions worse, but it cools down easier

Sorry, I'm being thick after a long week. Do you mean 5 dsg from ambient?

Can Motronic use the 1.8t sensor? Is a quicker reaction the advantage of this?

I have thought of moving the location of the stock one so it isn't in a big slab of hot (in traffic) aluminium. At idle the ISV also diverts all the air past the sensor too which surely doesnt help.

Moving the sensor sounds a bit risky. I would imagine audi would locate it where it will give an accurate reading, the ecu pulls timing at hotter temp for good reason.

1.8T is inverted to the 20vt sensor. the OE part is a PTC sensor not a NTC so they can't be interchanged. 10deg temp delta across the intake tract is pretty reasonable i think
I read somewhere the OEM sensor bodies are made of phenolic material to try to reduce heat soak. Not sure if its true or not. Regardless, they seem too work fine

From memory my homefried avant was 10-12c above ambient, but with slow speed city driving it would heatsoak into the 40s.

Sorry, was that an S4? Was it on a FMIC or standard?

No S2 Avant. I imagine an S4/6 would be a lot worse with that tiny intercooler.

Yeah, it's pathetic mate! Even with water injection it's struggling!
