    Alternative crank pulley tightening method

    I have had the head off my RR urquattro to fit a new head gasket and cambelt and am now ready to torque up the crank pulley/harmonic balancer bolt. 450nm of torque is way beyond the maximum of my torque wrench and I don't have access to a larger one. I could fabricate a torque extender but I think my torque wrench would break in this situation.
    As an alternative method of torquing up the bolt I have read that Audi issued a bulletin 10/93 for the ABY/AAN stating that 150nm + 180 degrees was acceptable. Since the RR and ABY/AAN bolt is the same part number, would this method be OK for the RR? My torque wrench will do 150nm and I have a 3/4 drive socket set and long bar to turn the extra 180 degrees. I also read that this is a common method used by quite a few other manufacturers.
    Has anyone else used 150nm + 180* on an RR or 3B?
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Rex

    I've tried this before but never managed to get to 180°, despite a 3/4" breaker bar and a long extension! Never had it come loose either though

      I used that method on my AAN. No problems so far.

          Using impacts can result in shattered crank gears.

            Did you use an impact gun to tighten it????

            We know it isn't good practice to use a gun as this is what likely damages the key on the pulley...

                If using chef's pulley, then it is billet, whereas the OE ones are cast, then machined. Billet won't fracture, unlike cast in that situation, but I would still get it really well seated before attacking it with a gun.

                I made a crank locking tool, and have a loooong 3/4" drive bar, know my bodyweight and where to place it on the bar to get the right torque

                    If you wanted to get all technical about it, get yourself a spring balance, and some strong arm muscles

                        am i plain wrong or you are supposed to use 6 meter long breaker bar in this case to achieve needed torque?

                        600mm is 0.6 of a meter...

                            I agree with everything apart from the fact that you use centimeters where you are supposed to use meters.

                              Weird, was sure I wrote a reply to this....

                              1Kg = 9.8N, so...

                              75Kg * 9.8 * 0.6m = 441Nm.
