What's the oil pressure like when hot @ idle? I think that's probably more important
On my GTIR I get at least 6 bar pressure when cold...my last one was about 7-8 but when hot they were both around 2-3 bar, so perfectly normal.
Another thing is what grade of oil have you got in there? Personally I don't think there's anything wrong, assuming hot oil pressure isn't too high
One other thing to remember is that the standard gauges in the S2 only goes up to 5 bar. Unless there's an aftermarket gauge installed, nobody really knows cold oil pressure as it goes clean off the scale!

Thanks and re the gauge, yeah that makes sense... I'll pop the shim back in and try and get her back on the road to do a proper hot test asap.
I have a aftermarket gauge installed (0-10 bar) and see the same oil pressure (7-8 bar) with a cold engine startup (0 degree celsius, 1000 - 2000 rpm). I use 5W-40 Castrol Magnatec and the car (S6 C4, AAN) has ca 300000 km on the tacho. Hot idle ca 1 - 1.2 bar. Ca 3.5 bar oil pressure hot engine @ 2000 rpm (new oil and new oil filter). I have experienced as low as 2.8 bar oil pressure with hot engine @ 2000 rpm with old oil (10000 km) and old oil filter (10000 km).
