    Too much oil pressure

I've just rebuilt the top end and at cold startup I'm showing 105-115PSI (7-8Bar) This is obviously much more than the 5-5.5 I have seen quoted.

Is is possible that someone has shimmed the oil pressure relief valve, if not, what else could be causing this issue?

I've had the oil pressure relief valve stick for no reason, took it out gave it a clean and everything was back to normal.

      Thanks.

I popped it out and it has the Shim in, cleaned it all up and removed the Shim. I'll test a cold startup tomorrow morning and report back.

BTW: Have noticed wear on one side of the release 'bullet'. If I pull it out again I'll take a photo.

        Cold Start Video...

This is with the Shim removed from the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

Also just to check my sanity...are these two the right way around or do both galleries get the same oil feed/pressure ?

I'm not sure about B4\Coupe blocks, but for my UrS4, it's the other way around. And behind the pressure sender barrel, the check valve resides.

What's the oil pressure like when hot @ idle? I think that's probably more important
On my GTIR I get at least 6 bar pressure when cold...my last one was about 7-8 but when hot they were both around 2-3 bar, so perfectly normal.
Another thing is what grade of oil have you got in there? Personally I don't think there's anything wrong, assuming hot oil pressure isn't too high

One other thing to remember is that the standard gauges in the S2 only goes up to 5 bar. Unless there's an aftermarket gauge installed, nobody really knows cold oil pressure as it goes clean off the scale!

Thanks and re the gauge, yeah that makes sense... I'll pop the shim back in and try and get her back on the road to do a proper hot test asap.

Mine pegs the gauge on a cold start so it's 5bar+, what grade oil are you using and what's pressure at hot idle?

The needle goes as far to the right on the gauge as possible on my s2. So probably 5.5 bar or more. Only comes down when it's well warmed up.

I have a aftermarket gauge installed (0-10 bar) and see the same oil pressure (7-8 bar) with a cold engine startup (0 degree celsius, 1000 - 2000 rpm). I use 5W-40 Castrol Magnatec and the car (S6 C4, AAN) has ca 300000 km on the tacho. Hot idle ca 1 - 1.2 bar. Ca 3.5 bar oil pressure hot engine @ 2000 rpm (new oil and new oil filter). I have experienced as low as 2.8 bar oil pressure with hot engine @ 2000 rpm with old oil (10000 km) and old oil filter (10000 km).

Thank Andy, I always second guessing myself and end up not knowing
