And so you should hide after a comment like that....so lets look at the facts.....

Top speeds are the same and the acceleration times seem to be similar, but umm, what's this, acceleration through gears, the ABY is upto 2 seconds faster :-

      30-50 mph (4th gear) 5.0s(ABY) 6.4s(3B)
      50-70 mph (4th gear) 4.1s(ABY) 5.7s(3B)
      50-70 mph (5th gear) 4.8s(ABY) 7.1s(3B)

I would therefore suggest that the little extra power and the considerable extra torque (particularly in over-boost) of the ABY, more than makes up for the extra weight

      Cheers n

Dont really see how you can do a direct in gear comparison of a 5spd car versus a 6 spd.
If the 5 spd was a gear down compared to the 6spd ABY car things would be closer and the speeds in gears would not be far apart

yeah there's no fair comparison like that, you'd have to do ABY in 6th against 3B in 5th.. The 3B in 3rd would walk an ABY in 4th any day. Then there's that lovely single mass flywheel..

Only 5th to 6rh would be applicable in reality.

Yes but the intermediates of the 3b are higher/longer from 3rd gear than the Aby so not a fair comparison.

ABY has stonger big end bearings than 3B. ABY spec is same is RS2 from memory
didn't know that... so the aby don't need the rs2 sputter bearings upgrade?

Thankfully it is dead easy to get this (or both) to the same power level (with the right chip and mapsensor), while the weight is not so easy to get rid off...

I can remember 2 tests: one of Sierra Cosworth with 6 speed that actually was slower overall and a 5 speed Xsara VTS versus a 6 speed 306 GTI. The Xsara being slower to 60 but quicker elsewhere except for those fake 5 th gear comparisons...

I take it from all the mumbling and complaining above that the 3B owners believe that their 7.5% weight advantage can compensate them for the 23% torque advantage of the ABY

As for the gear ratios, whilst I accept that the only real tests could be in 1st or 6th as they are the same, the 3rd gears are within 8%.

Although 4th and 5th are 14% and 18% out respectively, I would have thought that the much lighter 3B with its simple and rough single mass fly wheel would be able to overcome the gearing, but the figures speak for themselves.

Finally, since most people only use 6th on the motorways, I suspect that you'll actually find that we would usually be in the same gears (although changing at slightly different times I'll grant you) so I still think the original acceleration times have some validity.

                        Cheers n

P.S. If the 3B was better, why did Audi make the ABY?

Since turbo and such are equal this is only down to the mapsensor and ecu, so we would only have to call Minhea to sort that out. Or like most tune it to at least stage I...

More civilized? Hence the heavier flywheel. Just like the EVO V or X... EVO V is quicker but the X is a better daily car (they say)... And we could also ask why Audi ditch the 5 inline or the quattro system? The real thing I think is a huge advantage (in terms for tuning) is the ditributorless ignition system!
