What happens if you insert the short end pipe into turbo-maf hose and long end to wg?

Essentially you'll get weird boost behaviour as the WGFV will be steering boost from the bottom hose connection into the MAF hose and not the WG. This means that your WG will not be 'seeing' any boost pressure and your ECU will get mighty concerned when it detects that manifold pressure is higher than it should be.
Just install it the right way round. When the WGFV is OFF you should be able to blow air in the bottom hose (where it connects to turbo take-off point) and have it come out the hose which connects to WG.
The longest section of the T-Piece on the WGFV sonnects to MAF hose IIRC...
