    Hall sender/camshaft position sensor?

I had an annoying experience today and wondered if it sounded familiar to anyone.

My ABY coupe has been running perfectly for ages now so i am due a week or two on the bus I had gone out this evening to pick up my daughter and when i got back in about half an hour later it started fine but on the way up the road it was only boosting to the 'safe' limiter. I have no gauge at the moment but could tell as it drove like a non turbo. I pulled over and turned off the engine but then it would not restart for about ten minutes.

I recalled this happening once before a year or two ago and it hasn't done it since but this time it has left the ECU in 'limp home mode' with only low boost.

Will pull the fault codes tomorrow but looking through the threads it sounds like the hall sensor. is this the one behind the cam pulley? Any idea on price and BTDT's on its replacement. I take it the cambelt and whole front needs taking off to replace it Anyone got a part number?

Pulled the codes today and got it running as it should. Code was hall sender and have ordered the camshaft one part no. 034 905 161 from VAG parts. Fingers crossed it works till then Still looks a bit of a bar steward to change though, anyone done it

If its the hall sender it is more than likely the one on your bell housing.

But i replaced that one not long after i got the car and i unplugged the top one and got the same fault codes appear after clearing. I know the codes are likely to be the same for them both but working on the asumption the bell housing one is newer so it should be ok i have ordered the other one.

You say that but it is an audi S2 so its probably going to need a new ECU by the time i've finished

might sound like a non technical check but have you checked the contacts on the hall sensor connector that you have already replaced are in contact properly and clean?

Yeah gave all the connectors a wiggle and a squirt with contact cleaner but didn't seem to do 'out'. Even tried the 'water down the cam cover' thing much to my mechanic mates amusement but no effect. Unbelievable how much of a PITA these S2's are when they go wrong!!!

Right this job is officially a right bar steward The whole front needs to come off to get to this firkin sensor

Now i have to take off the cambelt and pulley

And heres the little fecker here

Can't believe its such a nightmare to change
Worse still i did the cambelt and waterpump 5000 miles ago and could have easily done it then .

It's nearly the end of the footbal season, got to find something else to b*tch about!

Has changing the hall sensor fixed the problem?
