I've heard rumors about ADU engines needing the cambelt timing to be 1 tooth retarded compared to marks on crank and head cover to run properly. Rumours that say Audi did this and reported the mod on the later model's workshop manuals.....

In short: on my RS2 and it seems a number of others, the cam pulley will only line up half a tooth plus or minus of the V mark. Half a tooth ahead of the V mark threw the car into limp home mode with a fault code of "cam sensor fault - short to positive" (even though the cam/hall sensor is not faulty). Half a tooth behind (anti-clock) of the V mark, things worked as they should do.
Hi!,
Does this have something to do with the water pump having more teeth or something?
IIRC the water pump pulley is smaller on the RS2 and the sensor window on the cam pulley is slightly smaller and in a different postion than on the S2.
I can understand why the water pump pulley is smaller,(so as to pump more water) but not why the cam pulley sensor window is different.

This was the case with my RS2Avant, however I still have some boost problems on this car.

Hi i would like any info anyone has because i am about to change my belt tomorrow
and my car has been down on power since i got it , and still have not tracked down
the problem
Cheers Jade
Jade, what seems clear so far is while fitting the new belt in, given you have the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligned, you shouldn't be able to have the mark on the camshaft gear perfectly matching the V mark on the valvetrain cover.
In this case you have to fit the cam pulley so that its mark stay 2-3 mm left compared to the V mark on the valvetrain cover.
Well my tomorrow turn in to a mouth , But i have now taken the car a part
Cambelts been changed , i think but not tensioner or water pumb
When i am faceing the car , looking at the cam mark on pully it is to the right of the mark on the cam cover , that is with the marks lined up on fly wheel & crank pully
AS i understand from Marco post it should be one thooth back so the cam pully mark is on the left side , is this correct ????
Thanks Jade
And what comes to the narrower hall plate gap I guess they want the timing to be more accurately set on the RS2. I guess..
The whole pulley mark issue is a bit strange as the pulley is unique for the ADU as the water pump is. This should mean that the smaller pump gear would not cause this. As Marco said the whole thing does not sound very "german".
