I have an annoying intermittant problem of loss of power and turbo overheating! Every now and again the turbo refuses to cut in and the car "holds back". Now and again this happens for a long enough period to cause the turbo to glow and boil the coolant! Could this be linked to a faulty MAF sensor? TCP pump (which is new!) Temperature gauge is also intermittant (more off than on!) Any help will be gratefully received.
This is one for the big gun guru's on the forum, but my simple logic...
Apart from 'don't drive it!!!.... the turbo is oil and water cooler, so first off, is the water pump ok? and what about the oil pump / oil feed and return lines? any leaks etc.... car running very weak maybe sometimes?? causing exhaust gas temps to get way too high? is she chipped? modded in any way?
One of the big guns will help you out here with some ideas I'm sure!!
If the turbo is glowing then you have major probs. DONT drive it until this is sorted. You will cause lots of expensive probs if you continue. If the gauge doesn't always work then check that the Multi function sender is working. The one in the water manifold with either 3 or 4 wires on it. Replace it if necessary. Other than that is the water level OK?
Its too much of an unknown to give a remedy for. But the turbo shouldn't glow, thats very bad. My fairly highly tuned setup has never had the turbo glowing. Thats very bad, maybe that the mixture is very lean. Get it checked out SOON.

I would recommend pulling fault codes before going any further. The multi function sender doesn't just power up the gauge so this is the first thing to get changed.
In my opinion water cooling system not providing coolant to turbo's center section cannot be the cause of the hot side glowing, at least not by itself.
Lean mixtures under heavy boost is the main cause I would address my attention at.
Expecially if the car is chipped and new maps are very "aggressive" (expecially on boost) the small k24 turbine housing could alredy work beyond its limits (and the ones of the exhaust header), so that even a slight tweakening of charge could rise exhaust gas temps enaugh to produce this effect.
I didn't understand if engine runs well anyway or you have some kind of cutoff provided by the ECU.
Anyway since ECU doesn't use lambda reading at WOT (as our forum's ECU experts told) but uses it's setted mixture map, if any fuel problems occur in the line (low fuel pressure, partially plugged lines and or injectors and whatever) under load at WOT, ECU may not now there is a problem other than if overall engine temps climb above the presetted safety value.

(snip)
Sounds to me as though your turbo stops spinning and then heats up.
Any screeching noises?
Can you get the front hose off and spin it by hand? See what the bearings are like?
Hmm! On the point of glowing turbos! Mine does and always has? As stock i could get it cherry red, turbo and manifold, and i mean cherry red!! And now chipped with and RS2 turbo it gets just as red but quicker? I mean this thing will light then engine bay at night! Mine is running code free? My m8 also has a stock UrS4 and his will glow nice and red too when pushed hard! Are we sure this is'nt normal? I thougth it was? Iam worried now!!
Money is everything! Second to Power of course!!! But money breeds power??
Possibly! but before i modded it it was pretty crap on fuel? completley the opposite to what it is now? I feel a fuel pressure check comming on! not sure how yet though?

No screaching noises and fault was intermittant.... happened once one day and cleared, and then same again yesterday. Having read some of your replies i think the multi plug sensor will HAVE to be changed anyway but reading another post i saw something about the MAF sensor connections corroding and not giving readings to the ecu? Could this be a possibility?
A while back my friend had a glowing turbo problem with his escort RS turbo, it turned out to be a case of cracked turbo hot side housing. So it wasn't a KKK but that is one small possibility. Never heard that to happen with audi's but you never know...
Have now sorted this 'little' problem. It was due to there being no fuse in fusebox for the after run pump and also, yet again, another car with a dodgy maf connector! Runs like a dream now, and its also ran in so i can now have some fun
