    Suggestions please?

Darn car decided to break down last night and is now a non starter. I've done a few checks today and found there is no spark from the coil. Car is a 3B and was running ok when there was a pop from the exhaust on gearchange and then no power, coasted to a halt and then it stalled, since then it will not start. Ive checked for fault codes and there aren't any stored in the ECU. The dizzy rotates under cranking and all electrical leads are connected. Dizzy was new 1 year ago and has metal gear, dizzy cap and rotor arm look fine and the hall sensor on the dizzy is connected. I get no volts between the two terminals on the coil while cranking the engine, not dure if this imples there my be an issue with the coil, it's amplifier or the trigger signal from the flywheel or dizzy?? Does anyone know what I can check to narrow down my search for the fault? Suggestions greatly appreciated

    Cheers Steve

Are you getting primary feed to the coil and amplifier ?

Can't remember which fuses are utilised for ignition on the 3B, but thats worth a look... Do the Norwegian 3B schematics on s2central.net help with this ?

You'll need an oscilliscope to see if you are getting signals from the hall & flywheel sensors - or another car alongside to play swap-sees with !

    Good luck,

Thanks Paul, I'm just about to go back out to the car with another multimeter. I'm starting to suspect one of the flywheel sensors, so I'll check them for open circuit condition. I'll have a look at the schematics on S2Central for wiring details...cheers Steve

Open circuits to the the crank sensors *SHOULD* bring up fault codes... Try disconnecting them yourself and see if Motronic sees an open circuit fault - which should of course clear when you plug them back in.

Trouble is - you may not have open or short circuit on the flywheel sensors - just a bad signal. Unfortunately Motronic can't tell you that........

Hall, rpm or 62deg signal fault, missing 62deg pin from flywheel, jumped timing belt.

Found the culprit!!! Not sure how it happend though
The annoying thing is it's going to be an engine out job to sort it

Ouch - what a total bee-atch. You've had more than your fair share of engine out jobs. You do have to wonder how that happened - could a stone get caught in there by some freak occurrence.

Must admit its a bit of an oversight from Audi and Bosch that this single mechanical failure causes a total outage.

I have no idea what caused it, I've not done any work on the car for some months, so it's unlikely to be a nut or bolt, etc that's dropped in there. I can only think that a stone or something like that has been flicked up into the engine bay and it dropped into the inspection hole on the top of the bell housing...still pretty unlikely, but possible. The crank position sensor has a pin shaped mark on the side of it at a 45 degree angle, I can only think this came from the pin when it broke off (thanks to Twoqu for spotting that) Like you say, I've had the engine out too many times to remember, looks like another session struggling on the driveway in the rain I may try a temp fix and bond the pin (if I can find it) or something like it into the small recess that's left, it's got to be worth a try before pulling the engine out..

Jamo, there should be a small pin where the white circle is in the picture. This is crank sensor pin for the ECU to detect the position of the crank. Without it the car wont start and run. The problem is, it's on the rear of the flywheel, which means it's an engine out job to drill out the pin and put another one in...
