That's an interesting proposal. What kind of gains can this give in practice?

in case you disconnect the alternator - you do not "waste" your engine power for battery charging. Kills you battery quickly, but you gain some performance. Some kind of actuator would be the best (but hardly possible =)) not to mess with friction losses.
BTW This kind of things they use in modern BMWs: alternator ideally works only when braking. Water pump and oil pump are also variable - only activated when necessary or running with partial load. ordinary haydraulic powersteering is also replaced in some models with Electric PS, only working when wheel is turned, when going straight just remains inactive.

Tip: Think about getting rid of this useless invention totally - reduces car weight and your own at the same time due to physical excersises when turning the wheel, And saves time afterall: can forget bout gym

About cutting alternator: Gain is minimal and reduced voltage could reduce spark quality and fuel pump capacity.......

Absolutely. The consequences for a 3B running high boost on a stock ignition system can be catastrophical in case the voltage drops.
I have upped the voltage on my alternator to 15.3v in order to improve spark and fuel pump flow, in addition to much improved headlights (also hooked up with relays and fat gauge wire). Downside is having to add water to the battery more frequently and shorter bulb life.
