door lock issues - what's goin on?

I've got a 20v that I just got running properly. So I just need to srt the doors on it. Driver's side lock seems to work ok but doesn't trigger the central locking system. passenger's lock just spins freely with the key in it. doesn't push the pin up and down. tailgate lock has to be opened with the key. even when the lock is left in the open (slit horizontal) position, as if the central locking is engaged.

Should I be looking at actuators? Is there a single central pump unit that I should investigate? I reckon the passenger lock spinning is just because part of the mech inside is snapped or fallen off. No biggie to sort that but i'd like to get the central locking working first.

As ever I bow to the collective wisdom of the forum. and raise one eyebrow in a semi smused fashion to the usual sarcasm & attempted wit. (wouldn't be the same forum without it )

the ones that just spins is likely the lever has snapped, they are easy to replace once the lock is out, just a circlip - but that is a PITA as you have to remove the window mech etc to get to it.

the ones that doesn't trigger the CL could just be a severed wire in the drivers door (easily done by accident when refitting the window mech - BTDT)
if your central locking doesn't work at all (eg from inside with door shut) your pump is probably at fault.

can't comment on the boot lock as i;ve only ever owned coupes, but likey to be the actuator thats at fault i'd guess.

    all pretty easy fixes

where does the central locking pump live then? can't for the life of me think where it is.

central locking pump is behind the drivers side rear quarter panel trim, kind of up behind the rear seat bolster, wrapped in foam insulation - not too bad to get to

boot lock is almost certainly either the actuator or where it connects to the lock itself - that breaks. Just remove the rear carpet trim section, the actuator is right in the middle, you'll be able to see if the actuator linkage is broken - if not its probably the actuator itself mate

Boot lock could be mechanism seized up, mine was when I got the car, took it to bits and got it moving with some WD40 and its been fine now for years.

thanks once again lads. I've some investigating to do once again it seems.
re selling up - aye the 16v went tonight and i'm properly gutted. That car got me into my audi coupes and this madness I love so much. Surprisingly the missus was more upset than me. she likes the comments from people at work about the fancy car and disbelief at the age of it.
She's looking forward to taking the s2 into work tomorrow though
.. which brings me onto.. yes the S2 is for sale too. I couldn't get away from the fact that I need a family car. turns out that having 6 coupes with 2 doors each isn't better than one car with 4 doors. strange logic to me but hey ho... So I now have a black W reg A6 1.8T 20v Quattro saloon sitting outside. family-tastic.
A new forum member by the name of "add" is interested in it if I can make the journey to Leeds since he's currently working 7 days a week. I'd rather not have to drive to Leeds but I want someone to appreciate it and tinker to finish off odds and ends that I find I don't have the time to do now. plus I need to pay for the bloody A6.
It will be sad state of affairs not to own the S2 but I have to be realistic and understand that I can't run several cars at once and the s2 will just sit and gather dust.

Steve - I plan to reduce the signature bit at a time mate. Can't see it getting too small mind you. I'll always need one or two to keep me out of mischief (cue 2.3 20v enter stage left)

right - my brain's imploded i'm so tired.
                  cheers
