    I am USELESS with electronics...

I still can't get my headlights to work!! Even with an abundance or wire, crimping tools and a box with every connection under the sun included... I think I need some help here...

Original problem - Driver side HID and main beam won't work. It did at first, flickered a few times and then died. I tested the ballast and checked bulbs to confirm they are not the culprits.

After cleaning the earth points on the IM and ring connectors with wet 'n dry and contact cleaner, I now have working main beam on both sides but neither HID works!

My HIDs are earthed to the loom so the plan was to move these to the chassis - last night, to test them, I ran about a metre of wire with a ring terminal from the IM, figured it was a known good earth point. Spliced the earth wire and connected it, car running so i was seeing 13V on the guage, still nothing...

    Connections are as follows:

Yellow wire from loom -> red wire into ballast on a spade connection. There is a corresponding red wire -> bulb. Then, a blue wire returning to the ballast and a black wire from the input side that *was* spade connected to a short wire soldered onto the earth pin in the headlight. This is what i then cut + spliced onto the earth wire from the IM.

Does this sound right? Is my "good earth" not so good after all? what the hell can I do, other than go back to stock and see if i can get that working first...

Dont know where to go so if someone 'in the know' can tell me what their next diagnosis steps would be I'd be grateful

    Cheers

    Ross,

Having tried different earth connections you should maybe check the HIDs positive input by connecting a known 12+ source to the input just to check the HIDs come on. If ok you can look at the switch wiring on the car for faults?

    cheers

First thing i'd do is check a standard bulb in the headlight to check all that works fine still.

then do as above, connect the hid to the battery just to see if they fire and light up ok (just run one + and - to the battery and see what happens)

then put the plus to the plug that goes to the back of the bulb on the headlight then the minus to a good chassis earth instead of the IM as I think that would be better, less cable involved etc.

try that and see how you get on.

Hmm, good point; I do have a spare battery that I can use. Will hook it up directly and see where that gets me, then work from there.

        Cheers

          Can you ...

Swap good bits from one side to the other...should quickly determine if parts or wiring are the issue.

            Update:

Today i tested with a direct line 12V+ from the battery, result on both sides! So my earths are good. I also diagnosed a dodgy connection on passenger side, sorted it and now all lights are working again on the passenger side.

The problem seems to be getting power on the driver-side low-beam. I'm suspecting a dodgy connection, perhaps under the dash? But I wouldn't know where to start to check connections, etc.

And to put a spanner in the works, whenever i connect the now working passenger HID the driver beam goes off, any thoughts

Check the fuse under the bonnet, it may have pulled more amps than the fuse is rated at and blown. i had to upgrade the fuse after fitting xenon lights.

                Hey guys,

Borrowed multimeter in hand I checked and sure enough 0V on the HID. Oddly enough the main beam was getting 12V, but still decided not to work.

I'd already checked the fuse and then thought check it again... well, it's news to me that there are TWO fuses and yes, one had blown

Replaced the one with another 10A, if it goes again will put 15A in. I now have working xenons

As for the main beam - it's a dodgy bulb. Swapped them over and hey presto, the other side became the intermittent one. It hasn't blown but the connection at the base of the bulb was covered in crystals (!), cleaned it up but it's still dodgy. Just going to replace it.

Feel stupid it was something so simple, was so much easier to diagnose with a multimeter! Gave the time and motivation to clean the leather though

                Cheers,

Damn, Ross I was going to say there's a fuse for each circuit but then thought no, maybe thats just the ur..
Glad you got it fixed anyway As Paul says, a multimeter and a "bit of work in the brain dept" or something

Glad its sorted - told you a multimeter would make light work of the situation
