On a coupe yes, havent taken apart an avant one. The interior trim panel unclips from the sunroof and will slide back, you will then be able to get at the bolts holding the panel on. Unbolt and lift out from above. From memory you have to do it with the sunroof in the raised position.91CQ20v - Gone to a new home

There actually different from coupe to 80/90 bodys. I've attached a pic as its easier than trying to write it out...

You need to take the headlining out of both Coupe and Avant to remove the complete sunroof assembly. Which is what I assume you want to do in order to save weight, I'm considering removing mine for this reason.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

Ohh you want to remove the complete unit. In a coupe the frame is held in with a bunch of bolts around the frame, couldn't be easier. Removing the headlining without damaging it takes time. I did it for an 80 sedan not long ago because the rubber was full of algue 'n stuff (manual operated OEM sliding/tilt roof). Replaced it with a felt-rubber from an 1303 VW Beetle
Only interiour part i removed was the operating handle, and ceiling light to get to the screw that holds the plastic cover on the ceiling. Then you can access the 2 screws covered with lock-nut that hold the operating gear that moves the slidercables.
Then i slided the roof back as far as possible.
I removed all screws visible from outside (except 2 black countersunk ones that keep the sliders together) and then you can lift the entire assembly out (put some masking tape on your roof to avoid scratches)
Then i put the handle back on to put the roof in tilt mode to get the new rubber on. You can take the 2 sliders off with the spiral cable in place (Watch out for the 2 black 'flaps' on the side! Put those back in de sliderrails before mounting, otherwise it will not fit back). It is a pain in the @ss because if you operate it outside the car the cables will twist the slider assembly!
Reassemble the roof in reverse order and watch out because the operating gear/sprocket has a kind of 'memory'. It counts the number of revolutions internally so you can't damage the roof when opening. When you mounted the roof back in place you have to put it in closed position. Then you take out that gear with the handle on. The handle has a button you press when you want to put it in tilting mode. Rotate is till it blocks (this means that this position marks that the roof is closed) and mount it back in.
That last step took the most time to figure out what the right position was. Every time i closed the roof till the handle blocked, i noticed the roof was a bit too far open.Comment

Yep, thats how the sunroof pannel is removed, the ONLY way to remove the runners ect is to drop the headlining.I did it for an 80 sedan not long ago because the rubber was full of algue 'n stuff (manual operated OEM sliding/tilt roof). Replaced it with a felt-rubber from an 1303 VW Beetle

Removing the headlining is not to bad a job if you go about it systematicaly, refitting can be a bit of a PITA, again patience is all that is required. Once the headlining is out the way it's really easy to get the complete sunroof mech out, 8 X 13mm m8 bolts and a wiring plug, if my memory serves me correctly. If you take the whole lot out this way it's striaght forward enough to refit in future. Having another pair of hands to help is recomended.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.
