Whats best for restoring a highly oxodized red Golf....

Slightly off topic I know but you guys have so much more know how than I do... (Creeping Over)....

I have just bought my son his first car.... A Golf 1.6 Driver 1991 off fleabay

It would have been an Audi Coupe (as he is a total Audi S2 Fanatic..... Always has been....) But the base models cost over £3k to insure for a 17 year old!!! Mental..

The car is in great mechanical order... it has total history and bills going back to 1994... the guy has even don a spread sheet on what its cost him each year - **** or WHAT....

But the previous owner has not really kept the exterior in any way as good as a condition as the rest of it...

As you can see its VERY oxodized and as we know red cars are the worst for doing this....

So the question is what "Cheap" (as he will have to buy 'em himself - I bought the car and am getting other stuff sorted timing belt-water pump etc ) products would you guys recommend he use for it???

I have suggested Tcut & lots of "elbow grease" Karate Kid Style!!....

For the black trims, use a "hairdryer" = hot air tool (english word please?) and blow on them, they will be like new

But if the trims are glued on, you will probably need to glue them back after.. watch the paint also

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

it will look good with just the hairdryer, but black wax may keep it good longer maybe?

            Thanks for that.....

Its a paint remover hes used there - much more heat than a Hairdryer... But should work on the bumpers & wheel arches!!

As for the polish, something like a G3 grade will cut the oxidation out of it if its really bad, if not ive used 3M "finnese it" before, its a bit finer but will still bring it up pretty good without too much fuss.

If you've got a buffer you'll be laughing.

              2p.

Even super resin polish will bring it up well, all depends on how far you want to go

I have seen how well your car came up from your thread.... But as I said its his first car and my son is on a very limited budget...

The car only cost £360.00 so I see no point spending £100's on a top notch polishing kit.... As much as I fancy one to add to my collection of tools!! (Some never Used!!)

So it's REALLY CHEAP options we are looking for.....

Thanks guys!!! For the replys so far!!

All the stuff suggested farecla, AG will help , but you'll need to usea a sealant or the oxidation will start again, if you wanna do it by hand get menzerna intensive polish and some good applicator pads (could take you a weekend, 20 hours) and a sealant.

If you can use a rotary (or know somebody who can) use the same mezerna compound or similar, you could easily do a golf in 3-4 hours, but again seal it with something once you're done
