I am leaning towards a roof skin swap if the cost isn't crazy. The current roof is rusty in front right corner too so would be a bonus to find a cleaner one.

Oh just seeing marks last post - nice idea that. Quite ingenious. I will weigh that option up as well.

i would change the skin ,its easy job , many ppl does it here with late benz , which came without sun roo and fit skin with sunroof , and bimmers too , so why not it works with audi? , just take of the spot welds with a driller , and set in place of it the none sunroof trim and weld it back with seam sealer. and that is it , its simple specialy our ppl here iq is 10/100 from your ppl

I love the sunroof for getting some fresh air in the car but that does sound tempting...

Paul, for the quickest and cheapest fix id just wrap the roof with some 3M film, Carbon, matt black etc. Should be enough to cover the sunroof completely and make it watertight, fully reverseable with no permanent damage so you can fix this once and for all when welding up the rollcage.

If you want to see what is involved in a roof skin swap then check this thread out, lots of drilling!

Holy chop shop that man - I prefer the look of the other method with a tube welded in place of the sunroof gasket. Could actually fill that for a smooth finish, prime it and apply some best 3M carbon fakery wrap for ultra light looking roof.

Split the metal skin off the sunroof. Position the skin panel accurately within the roof aperture, and tack weld it into place with 100 -150 very small welds to spread the heat, and minimise warping. Finish with a skim of filler, and job done.

Thats what I am leaning towards myself. Seems the most logical and least hassle.

My method worked a treat, you loose the sunroof permanantly, if you are a competent welder you'll get very little distortion, and as I said, only needs a skim of filler. BTDT. Much less work than changing a roof skin.

I would like to lose the sunroof on my avant as I never ever use it but I never thought of getting rid of it before. Thing is there will always be a mark of some kind where it once was
