    Sunroof problem

    Hi all,

I can't get my sunroof on my RS2 to open, the motor is trying to turn, I have tried using the tool in the bottom of the motor, but won't turn, removed motor and on its own it will go through the sequence, how do you get into the sunroof mechanism to free it, all help appreciated.

Most likely the gear in the motor that's failed and not a problem with the sunroof. This part:

Take the motor off (if you can) and see what the gear looks like.

      Hi

Had the motor out, first thing I thought (should have said), cog OK, seams to be further in the roof mechanism, thanks.

That's ok, I had a similar problem recently and the cog was split in half. Does it make any noises? Struggle to open?

Motor turns about a 1/4 turn then stops when bolted to the sun roof, the two drive worms are not damaged, but when the motor is removed and not engaged, it performs as it should.

It may be that water has got into the cables and they've seized, this happened to the roof in my coupe, I ended up replacing the whole sunroof mechanism with a second hand one. Any avant sunroof cassette will fit your car.

I think you are correct, but what is involved in changing the sunroof mechanism, do you have to remove all the head lining ? then what, thanks.

Use your had to pull the roof back while hold the button (carefully). You want the roof open. Then once open you will see a couple of holes that you can put wd40 in.

I can't, as the sunroof is shut at the moment, unless there is some way of getting hold of the sunroof, is there a diagram I could look at that anyone would point me to, thanks.

Try putting some WD40 down the cables, as Newsh said it sounds like they've seized.

Remove headlining, undo about 8 x 10mm nuts and pull the drain tubes of the pipes in the corners and the whole thing drops into the car.

If you cant open the roof at all it's hard to get it moving in situ.. I think at one point, with the motor detatched, I managed to push the back of the roof down and then push it back a bit. Even to get the trim panel off you need to have the roof open a bit.

Some sucess, with the motor disconnected, I pushed the back of the roof down, (as you suggested), I, managed with the motor back on, to move the roof back and forward, it took almost 15 min before it would move right back and forward, only challange is the seal on the roof has come off at the back of the sunroof, so next question how do you put it back in place or do I replace the seal with a new one as it seems dry, all depends on how easy I suppose.

Nice one, try and work some grease into the cables as WD will just dry out after a short time.
You can glue the seal back on.
