rs2 door mechanism

My rs2 drivers door won't close, it seems the latch mechanism won't catch when it is shut. I think there is a spring or something inside that pushes a piece up to hold the latch shut which must be broken. I have a latch mechanism I can take off a 95 80 quattro.
Do I need to take the door card off the rs2 to change this part?
Is there an airbag behind the plastic triangle in the rs2 door?
If so what do I need to be careful of/need to do when taking the door card off?

You can change the door catch without taking off the door card, I did it recently on the avant

On mine you would try to shut the door but it would just bounce open again

Take out the big screws, pull the catch towards you and un-hook the wire rods.

Thank you both very much for the info, issue is now sorted with much less drama than I first anticipated. Now to find a another one to go back on the 80 quattro, I use the rs2 as a daily but I live up 3km of dirt so the 80 quattro makes sure the rs2 stays clean and dust free
