As said bigger the better for both lathes and mills, more weight and body means less deflexion on heavy cuts.
I've used the center lathe t work lately its a good size a machine, 5 foot between centers and 8" swing over bed. Its has a digital read out in inches and the calibration on the hand wheels is in millimeter so can preform both. Other than that theres a bridgeport in the tool room with both manual and cnc control. There theres all the manual machines for surfacing and grinding which are actually left over from when the factory was a assembly plant for lockheed in WWII. Then theres roughly a dozen cnc turn/mill turret lathes used for production parts and about dozen vertical and horizontal cnc machines. So can make just about anything after work aslong theres no production work on the machines at the time

I'm searhing for a small lathe atm. Did look at those small china lathes, but the feeling wasn't good at all. Now I have been looking at a good old school Gamet(Colchester) Master mk1 lathe with a 2.2kW motor and many accessories, different chucks, quick change tool post, cutters etc... It looks like to be in very good condition. What would be a good rasonable price for this?

Ok. It will propably be a 6.5" Master. It looks exactly like this, only in a lot better looking condition. The asking price is 2500 euros.

It comes with two 3-jaw chucks, one big 4-jaw chuck, one big dog plate, two steady rests, quick change tool post and tool mounts, normal cutters and hole cutters, + maybe something else.

Depending on what your looking to do, a Milling machine could be a lot more useful, particularly a CNC mill

Of course I am biased by the types of components I would rather make/fix, but most turning operations are very easily done on a Milling machine, of course there are plenty exceptions and you can use a lather to Mill
But having worked in the industry and knowing how to code and use CAM, I know which Id buy first. That said, I'd chose a lathe if I didn't know CNC very well
