    Casting

Anyone here casting ally? Tried it for the first time, did cast some aluminium barts out of scrap ally. Handy to use for something... maybe. Did pour the molten ally in stainless pipes and then just cut them open.

The aluminium turned out quite soft so not the best thing to machine, but I have to experiment with different cutters. Good thing is that there was not much pores in them, only a couple in the other bar.

I went for casting course in polytechnic. It was fun. Smelly though.
Everything less than 2 bar is considered to be naturally aspirated

A gravity die in that material will be like Swiss cheese due to the thick sections, as it cools at different rates, resulting in porosity. It won't cool uniformly. As long as the end product is non-structural, then it'll be OK (such as boost gauge holders).

      Cheers

You could use a welding heat blanket to keep the temp uniform. Then gradually lower the temp of the blanket. Used in welding of certain types of boiler/steam piping preheating and stress relief.

I'm afraid this won't help in this application. The centre outwards towards the OD will still be full of uneven material. As I said though, the billets could still have a multitude of uses..

Did you just use a propane touch to melt thus or? I have only ever tried this with lead though have worked in an alloy head casting factory when I was younger.

What insert do you use in the tool holder?

Yes, with propane and oxygen torch in a metal crucible. A small furnace and a graphite crucible would be a lot easier to use. Soon need to make some shape castings, have to make a mold first.

I don't know what type it is, but I will propably need a different kind for ally..?

I remember being told when I was an apprentice and did a bit of turning that you have to dull the tool slightly so it isn't too sharp otherwise you tear off material rather than cutting it when working soft material.

We did this at college, good fun. Get some casting sand, make a couple of wooden frames and you can just make a pattern and a runner and riser for simple parts

Tool geometry should be different for allu, look first at rake angle. Also get the insert off and check pn online. You can use non allu dedicated tool and play with feed and rpm also.
Looking at the part machined seems you had some vibrations also?
Anyway,i guess you will not machine parts for nuclear plants or planes so all will be fine

                        Regards!

Fist test trying to cast something with shapes. Some small modifications still need to be done to the mold. The aluminium didn't smoothen out properly in the bottom.
