    Air con removed

Over Xmas, whilst doing the cambelt and stuff, I siezed the opportunity to remove my aircon...well, most of it.

    Items removed:
    Condenser
    Pump
    Pump bracket to snub mount
    Accumulator in OSF wheel arch
    Hose from condenser to bulkhead
    Hose from condenser to pump
    Hose from pump to accumulator
Hose from accumulator to union just above turbo
    Some harnessing

Items left in (because I ran out of time!):
Hose from union above turbo to bulkhead
    Everything inside the cabin
    Some harnessing

    Downsides:
aircon doesn't work anymore...it needed a recharge anyway so wasn't working before it was removed!

    Benefits:
Reduced mass at the front of the car
Better airflow to main rad (aux rad has been removed too and plugged now instead f just bypassed!)
Loads more room for custom intake plumbing and maintenance

Total mass removed is aproximately 18 kilos plus fluid. Hey, ever little bit helps!
    Pictures to follow

    Note:
Some of the parts were less than 2.5 years old so please shout if you need any bits!

Yep, working fine. Last time I used it was in Le Mans but the fluid was all gone by 3rd qtr last year! Seals should be OK though. I used to excercise the pump weekly to keep everything lubricated.

Is the ac system the same for 3b's + aby's then, do you have part numbers etc from it?

        thanks

I have to drive to Gloucester in a few hours time for a meeting! LOL! Can't sleep! Won't get to check the part numbners until tomorrow night, or should I say, tonight!?!

Lee - I was going to ask what exactly you removed - I'm still swithering about taking it out - but after looking at it yesterday I could get another cooling hose in if that wasn't there.

Martin - what aerospace company do you work for in Surrey?

aux rad worth replacing? the matrix on mine has gone, im about to order a new one but i herd pple say not to bother and just to bypass it.

surly there is a reason for it being there.. can someone expand this theory a little bit to me please.

It's to provide additional cooling, Thya can be re-cored at certain radiator places. Look in the yellow pages.

I had a quick look on EKTA, and I cannot see any differences between 3b and ABY for the manual aircon systems, it just states aircon for all coupe quattro models, but I would wait for a more authoritative answer as I am an EKTA newbie.

The main difference is the pump make. I do not know when they changed, but my car -94 has a Zexel pump and the older 3b usually has a Nippon Denso pump.

From what I´ve been told it is not (easily) possible to use the other pump make. Probably not at least without changing hoses.

I assume you have the standard controls inside the cabin and not Climate control.

I would be interested in the parts to convert mine to Climate.

                        Anyone know what is involved?

Do you have to change the main body of the A/C and recharge or is it all bolt on?

Unfortunately the manual aircon system and the climate control system appear to use very different components, so I think the simple answer is no it is not a simple bolt on, but I am not sure which parts need to be replaced.

What needs to be fit is all the electrical gadgets under the dash (el. valves and that sort of things). Temp sensors on top of the dash and at the celing. A lot of wiring needs to be sorted out. Otherwise the engine bay located equipment would not have to be replaced.

                              Thanks Kroegarn,

I must try to find the bits. I'm not scared abot the wiring. I bought my audi in bits 11 years ago and built it. No dashboard and wiring spilling all over the place.

I believe they are not very reliable.
