If you got access to a compressor and wash gun, spray some IPA down them.
Should do the trick

the system should have the in line filter . See from etka and locate it and change it. Cleaning the system is very tricky because of oil in pipes. I see the only alternative to chnage the filter carefully. If cleaning with strange fluids you need to clean then the residues of cleaning material later and change in both cases the dryer unit.
locate the filter and tell how it looked like ?Comment

If you take it to a air-con specialist they will do it for you. Just refit everything including a new receiver drier but leave the belt off so when you drive it to them there is no danger of compressor turning (unless you find a mobile specialist!!).
DON'T use any chemicals in the system as these may damage the seals and may react with the gas to form acids that will attack the alloy piping
Plus the air-con service machine does a sniff test when you first attach and if it detects foreign chemicals it will refuse to operate!
The air-con bloke will flood fill the system with liquid R134a (air-con gas) and pump it around the system and through a filter (another remote reciever dier) and is air con station away from the compressor eg backwards and this will wash out any dirt.
The ONLY otherway is replace every pipe, seal, condenser and evaporater (radiators) and you dont want to do that from a cost and a work point of view.
Your probably looking at £180 to back flush the system but that does include the regas at the end, it is very labour intensive (aprox 3 hrs dependent on the car)
If you don't believe me get advice from your local air-con specialists (look in the yellow pages)... I used to be a air-con engineer
