I'm thinking of having the matrix very shortly if the anything that should be replaced while having it done, while the dash is out? Such a seals for the air-con?
Lee, there are no seals in the air-con system pipes behind the dash. The pipes for the air-con are solid until they emerge through the bulkhead and connect on the engine side and those seals are easily reached.
However, the low pressure switch for the air-con is behind the dashboard, sandwiched between the evaporator and the bulkhead above the ECU. This switch does have a seal and also the air-con can't work if this switch fails so you could consider replacing it "just in case"
Cheers for that. I had it all checked last summer and it all worked fine other than a split pipe which I have now. So all I need to do is get the matrix done put the pipe on and I'll have aircon and a heater that works right! At last. But time will tell!
Can't believe i have to take the ferkin dash out to do this! Just about to give up on this S2 ownership thing, but not quite yet

If you get a mate or 2 to help it makes the job so much easier,we did one in about 3-4 hours a few months back but set aside at least a weekend if you aren't familiar with the dash and all its attachments.
To remove a dash is easy, about half hour to remove it and an hour to put it back in if you know what your doing, I've done it on at least 4 cars now, the s2 being the next one that will get the treatment as i've got a mint dash to go in mine, I did a thread a while ago with some pictures etc when I removed the dash from a 20v.
What about the aircon, does the system need to be degassed and disconnected? Is there no way to do this and leav the gas in, i just had it filled!

You should be able to leave it filled. Take the dash out. To replace the matrix you only need to remove the central part of the heater. After removing the clips holding the central part to the A/C evaporator which is the part in front of the passenger, you can get the central part out. The challenge will be getting all the clips back but it'll save you having to degass the system.
