  • long time S2 owner - but zero tech knowledge - exhaust query

Hi. I recently bought an S2 again (having sold my last one 18 years ago and missed it ever since).

The 1996 coupe I have now needs a few bits doing. One of which is the exhaust. I don't know what is on it currently but it looks terrible and it sounds super quiet. I think the front and mid sections are probably standard with some kind of poor aftermarket rear section fitted.

I really want an exhaust that looks OEM but just allows the car to give you that 5 cylinder warble under revs without being offensive or booming while touring / motorway driving. So, a nice subtle quattro sound under acceleration but I don't want the 'Max Power' look.

Very much value the opinions on here.

    Thanks

So you want to have cake and eat it?
Having a sporty warble has consequences unfortunately. I have a Milltek on my S2 Avant and with standard Rs2 cats it just about ok on the motorway with some drone around 60-65 mph. My S2 Coupe Project had a Scorpion back box with standard exhaust. Less drone but also less warble. My Rs2 project had a standard exhaust and cats. Very little warble but lovely and quiet on the motorway (and autobahn up to 125mph). My Ur has a full resonated Milltek and sounds fantastic with full on warble but its horrendous on the motorway

Full Miltek on my Coupe without cats is lovely. Good wabble, no drone and nice noise. I have no idea if they are still available new or secondhand.

        Thank you both!

That is useful. So full SS miltek front to back doesnt sound awful when touring long distance and motorway mileage? Seriously tempted but no idea what I am looking for. I need an S2 Forum guru nearby that I can swing in to to take a look at whats going on with mine I think.

I've been searching for an off the shelf exhaust for a while now too, There really isn't too many options for the Coupe that isn't silly money. Supersprint still sells them but they are charging plenty for it although it does include the downpipe as part of the system. If it had been a 3" downpipe I might have pulled the trigger on it but it's 2.75" which probably would be all i'd need but if and when I did decide to go for more power I'd kick myself if that was the restriction.

I have two Coupes - one with a Miltek and one with a SS of unknown origin, both cat back. The Miltek is superb, the other not so much (poor fit, rattles, blows etc). If I could buy a Miltek for the other I would and I have not found a viable alternative. Watching this thread with interest.

Had a Milltek on my coupe, it sounded great, doesn't drone like a Milltek on the Avant, I guess because the avant system is straight and the coupe one bends over the rear axle and the rear box is sideways, then the two tail pipes are different lengths which is always good..

John makes a good point regarding the the bends around and after the rear subframe helping to reduce drone on S2 Coupes, it's not something I'd really considered previously...

Anyway,I fabricated a straight through turbo back 3" system for my old RS2+ spec 3B S2. I necked it down to 2.75" at the rear subframe and finished it with an off the shelf straight through Jetex SS rear box. I was amazed by how quiet the car was, the Jetex box fitted perfectly after playing with some different size exhaust rubbers and looking pretty much stock at a glance.

I was expecting to have to add another simple box in the tunnel to stop it droning but didn't need to and I did the North Coast 500 twice in that car which was also very stripped down weighing in at 1330 wet. So zero sound deadening other than a carpet with all the smelly, heavy old tar pressure washed off the back reducing the weight from 18kg's to less than 5kg.

The car had a really nice deep exhaust note, if you want I can probably dig up an old Scotland meeting thread where my car can be compared on film to various other Audi's whilst cruising at around 55mph.

Supersprint turbo back systems are outstanding quality but very expensive, a good fabricator should be able to copy one for about half the price.
